Why, when I write a draft email and try to print out my draft, do I
get the annoying message that "The conversation has been deleted"? It
means I have to go back into my drafts file, where the draft still is
(so long as I saved all of it before trying to print it out).
D(r)aft, I call it!

Could you descibe in a bit more detail exactly how you're trying to
print it? I was trying to replicate your problem, but when I didn't
have a problem when I did:
1. Compose mail
2. Save
3. Go to drafts and open it
4. Print

I didn't see an option to print directly from the compose stage.

No, I don't try to print direct from the compose stage. But often I
draft something, save it, and then move to something else. When I come
back to the draft and try to print it out, I often get the message
that "This conversation has been deleted". So I have to go back to the
"Drafts" section and open the message again, whereupon it usually
prints out (at the second attempt). This is annoying and irritating.
But it may not happen to other people, and may therefore be hard to
replicate.

I just altered a draft, saved it, and tried to print it out. I got
this message:

"The requested conversation has been deleted and is no longer
available. Click here to go to your Google Mail account."

That actually makes sense to me. If you altered it and saved it, you
no longer have the draft you opened. Seems simple enough to just
print right after you open it to avoid this confusion between your
browser and GMail.

It makes no sense to me. Why can't I print out anything I have saved,
without having to close it and then open it again?

Once you have saved it, the one on your screen has been replaced by the one you saved. This is becasue it is a draft, not a real email yet. At least, that is how I read what Zack typed, which also makes sense to me once he pointed it out. Why can't you jsut print it and then save it, without having to save it first and then print it?

Sorry about the lack of trimming, I had an email-cramp (a highly specific variation on a brain-cramp)...

I can't print it and then save it because - as I said earlier - when I
try to do this, I get the message that it has been deleted.

I have tried printing before and after saving the draft. It works fine for me. The only time that it wouldn't wotk is if I use the same browser tab/window to go to another site.  But then you get a warning from Gmail.  Is that what you are doing?

No, Julie, that's not what I'm doing: I'm simply trying to print out a
"saved" draft as soon as i save it. Sadly, none one of the replies
that people have posted answers my original query (see my first
posting). It would be nice if one of those Google employees called
"GMail Guides" would supply an answer.

While I'm at it, why - when I print out something - does it often
change the font and/or spacing of my original - for example,
introducing bold-face where I had ordinary Roman letters?

If you're looking for a Google Guide to respond, then you should post
to a group where they are. This is just a user's group (read the
name) with no official google presence.

But the information supplied by Google says:

What is a Google Help Group?
A Google Help Group is a place where product enthusiasts can find
answers, ask questions, and share expertise with other users about
specific Google products. While most of the content within these
groups is authored by users like you, Google employees do jump in from
time to time. Look for the blue "G" badge to find posts written by
Google employees.

That's why I was appealing for help from Google employees.

That actually refers to the groups at
http://groups.google.com/group/Gmail-Help-Discussion

We're just an independent group that happens to be rather large and popular.

Yes that would be true of the Gmail Help Discussion group:
http://groups.google.com/group/Gmail-Help-Discussion

Not this group:
