The subject line says it all.  After I reply to an email I go back to the view of that email that I just left.  Is there a setting that will take me to my list of unopened email so I can continue on with the next one?

Thanks in advance… Bob

Bob,

No, but here's something that may work for you just as well.

If you go to Settings > Labs, there's an auto-advance lab which, once enabled, modifies the general tab of settings with an auto-advance option. It offers the following actions:

Auto-advance:
After archiving, deleting, muting, etc. a conversation:
Go to the next (newer) conversation
Go to the previous (older) conversation
Go back to the threadlist

I always have mine set to advance to the next conversation. So when I reply to an email, I first see the conversation updated with my reply, the I click on archive and I'm taken to the next conversation. This allows me to process through my inbox without having to move back and forth between the threadlist and the conversations it contains. Or you can select "go back to the threadlist" if you prefer to see the updated list after archiving or deleting.

Try the keyboard shortcuts. E.g. 'g' then 'i' will take you back to Inbox, or simply 'u' will take you back to the thread list. To see all the shortcuts, press '?' for the help overlay.

I have been hesitant to do that because of the word "archiving".  I do not want to move the read message anyplace.  I still want to leave it in my inbox.  Will this let me do this?

Thanks in advance… Bob

If you Archive a message, no.  Archiving means taking it out of your Inbox.  And that's exactly all it means.

The message doesn't move anyplace special, such as to off-line storage.  All your messages always stay in one place; it's just a difference of which labels are attached to them.

Each person has their own personal preferences.  But I've found that many Gmail users don't realize that they do not need to keep every message in their Inbox, for fear of losing them.  I like to use the Inbox only for messages that need further attention.  All messages I am finished with, I move out of the Inbox.  It just means they are removed from that view.  Those messages are just as accessible to me as before.

Regards,
Andy
