I have set up my gmail to sms my cell phone whenever I get new mail.
The problem is the text message appears on my phone but it says its
from a phone number which doesn't exist....it displays a phone number
from an old contact that I have deleted a long time ago. Where in my
gmail settings do I change the phone number from which gmail "sends
from"?

I could be mistaken, but I don't know of Gmail itself having this
feature. Are you using an outside service for it?

Gmail can send a text...in settings/forwarding and POP IMAP...forward
a copy of incoming mail to "yourphone num...@msg.telus.com"
telus is my mobile provider. But when I get the text..it says its from
"999-9999"....where does this phone number come from? How can I
change gmails sender ID(phone number)

Oh, I see. Clever.

I think it all just depends on your phone and Telus. For my phone
(Android on Verizon), it shows the email address it came from.

It wouldn't make sense for Gmail to be able to specify the phone
number it came from, especially considering it has no idea the email
address you're giving as the forward is a "special" one that becomes a
text for your phone.

Yes.....I completely agree with you.......but why did it grab a phone
number from an old(deleted) contact that no longer exists. I wish it
would just show the email that it came from....like yours. I am also
running android...... on my HTC Desire HD. Thanks for responding.

Hi Budwha

Telus is sending you the SMS, Gmail is simply forwarding an email to an email address. You need to log in to your Telus portal and change the callback number setting there.
I've never heard of SMS having an email address as sender, it is always a number AFAIK.

Yeah, the email address thing is probably some verizon/android magic that is wonderfully custom and unworkable in any other situation.

AH..Ha...Thank you Marko...I just checked Telus
website...quote..."999-999-9999 is the number that appears on your
phone if someone sends a text message using either email or a TELUS
website."
I couldn't figure out where this phone number was coming from...now I
know
