A friend (no, really) asked for help moving a message from the Trash
back to her Inbox. When I open the message in the Trash and click on
the Move To button, I see lots of labels she created, but the Inbox
label is missing. In other GMail accounts I use, the Inbox label is
present in the Move To function. What's up with that?

Are you sure you clicked the Move To button and not the Labels button? When
I do this, I see "Inbox" under Move To but not under Labels, and it is
listed separately from all the user-created labels.

Any chance you clicked on Move To when you were looking at a listing of
messages and none was selected? It doesn't appear unless one is selected or
open.

Possible workaround: When you have the message open, there should be "Trash
| X" near the top (below the row with the Move To button). Click on the "X"
to remove that system label from the message. Now you should be able to
find the message in All Mail, and can click the Move to Inbox button from
there.

Or try running the "older" version of Gmail (which has a different
arrangement of buttons).

I don't have a good answer to your question, except to note that "Inbox" is
a special reserved label, and I think I've read that there's one or two
subtle differences depending on how long ago you opened your Gmail account.

Or maybe her computer has bad code in the cache, so she might try deleting
the cache and cookies to see if it makes a difference.

If she can't see the same as you remember, suggest she temporarily
uses the Older version, which has things just slightly different, and
then she'd probably be able to follow your instructions better.
As for why she can't see Inbox, under the 'Move to' button ...... no
idea! For what it's worth, it's there in my installation!

To be honest, when I retrieved some emails I had changed my mind about yesterday, I never even thought of clicking on the "Move To" button - I just clicked on the separate "Move to Inbox" button. Maybe she is using a different version of Gmail than you are (either HTML or the old version, or the new version if you are using either of the other two).

Actually, when I'm in a message where the "Move to Inbox" button is
present, it replaces the "Move to" button.

I don't have a "Move to Inbox" button anymore, ever since the changes a
couple weeks ago.

Though I still have it if I drop back to the "old" version....
