I've just come across a problem I've not experienced before. Each
member of my family has a gmail address. In the past we've logged out
of and into the different accounts with no problems. Today, after
successfully logging in to one of the accounts, a pop up window
appeared asking for a user name and password and saying that access had
been denied due to an incorrect user name or password (even though I'd
successfully logged in). Tried to log in using Firefox, Opera and
Explorer and the same thing occurred with each of them. An error
message FW-1 appears in the pop up window.

Very grateful for any suggestions about how to deal with this.

Sounds weird : I can't remember any pop-up window logging into my gmail
account :-/
You say that despite you have an error message you can log into your
Gmail account ? And that you face same problem using several browsers ?

Any malware on your PC ?

Do you have any other Google products installed, such as GoogleTalk,
GoogleDesktop, GoogleDeskbar, etc... many of these have logins of
their own, but share the cookie with the GMail login. If one of them
is trying to login again while in the "other" account, this could
result in behavior similar to what you're describing.
