Hi, I am trying to archive my "Sent mails", but I can't find out how to
do that. I can move them to my Inbox and archive from there, but that
doesn't remove them from "Sent mail". I like to keep my "Sent mail" in
such a way that it only contains those mails that I expect an answer
from. I would like to archive the rest. Anyone any good ideas?

It is impossible to remove messages from sent mail, short of deleting them completely. I would recommend starring those emails you are currently working on/waiting on a reply for. Instead of looking in sent mail then, you'll just have to glance in the "starred" area.

To add to that, any email that is not in the inbox IS archived in GMail's eyes.  All the term "archive" means in GMail is "remove the label: inbox".

To add to that... Sent mail isn't really a "folder" since GMail has no
folders. Every link on the left is basically a quick search. Sent
mail is a quick search for "from:me". So you cannot remove
conversations in which you sent a message.

If you delete an item from Sent Mail, you delete it completely. If a
message is in Sent Mail, it does not use up space twice (e.g. in a
conversation and Sent Mail). Re: Ryan's comment, if you use your
starred items for other things, you can also put messages you expect an
answer from in a label, than click on your label to view such messages.

Your sent mail is already archived.  Perhaps we are misunderstanding each other when you say "archive".  In GMail terms, archived means not in the inbox.  What do you want to happen when you "archive" your sent mail?

I gather that they want to be able to empty their sent label.  I believe "delete" is the only way of achieving that.

Mightn't one copy oneself on the valued message then archive the copy;
just a work around of course; it seems odd that sent mail is a
different sort of object received mail.

Why would you want to do that? When you send an email, it's permanently
in your "archive" unless you manually delete it. By resending the email
to your self (or even by CCing or BCCing it), you are just wasting your
storage space and duplicating your efforts.

Now I understand; everything is archived; sent mail is an automatic
group. Thank you.
