This has been happening to me for over 6 months now and its very frustrating...

I will explain....

1. somebody sends me an email
2. i reply to that email
3. i delete their incoming email from my inbox because i no longer need it
4. when i go into my sent items to view the email i sent to them it has disappeared

* this doesn't happen in all cases and i have yet to identify a pattern as to why it would happen to some recipients and not others
** i am just using the normal gmail web interface with IMAP
*** i have no filters setup
**** i have not physically deleted anything from sent items - why would i do that???? if i did i would definitely remember!!

please can somebody explain?

Thank you

Your second star doesn't make sense... it's the web interface, or IMAP, not both.  At least, not directly, you'd have to have two windows open, one with your IMAP client, and one web browser.  OR are you stating that those are two methods you access by?  If so, it's very possible the IMAP client is moving messages or removing them.  If it's set to store send messages locally, it would put them in a local file, and not into the sent items on the web interface.  Unless you followed GMail's help pages' instructions for setting up IMAP perfectly.

Also, when you #3, delete it from the inbox... firstly, you don't need to delete it, it's better to archive, so it's around later... you have over 15G of space for mail.  And Secondly, how are you deleting... if you use the trash can icon at the top, you're not deleting a message, you're deleting a thread; which includes your sent message.  To delete a single message, you select the drop down triangle on the far right, and select "Delete this message".

I agree with Zack.  Once you send a reply, the reply instantly becomes part of the Conversation with the original message.  When you delete using the trash can button along the top, you are deleting the Conversation.  That's how Gmail works.

To delete only one individual message while leaving the rest of the Conversation intact, you must use the drop-down menu in the upper right corner and select "Delete this message."

Alternatively, go to Settings > General and select "Conversation view off."  Then your actions affect individual messages only.

If you don't believe that you did this to yourself, try skipping your step #3.  I can pretty much guarantee that your problem will vanish.

You could also visit your Trash, where you would have found your replies along with the original messages (until you empty the Trash or the normal 30 day wait period runs out).

I can understand your frustration, but I don't understand why you are so inconsistent with yourself.  First you said "Sent items definitely 100% disappearing from Gmail," but then you said "this doesn't happen in all cases."  So which is it?  And then there was the oxymoron "i am just using the normal gmail web interface with IMAP."

Andy - i didn't say "100% of sent items are being deleted" i said "they are 100% disappearing" - so i think you might have misread what i said there as i was simply making the points that (a) they were definitely disappearing and (b) i wasn't physically going into the sent items folder  in gmail web interface to delete them.

Regarding the IMAP issue (or non issue) i was just pointing out that i have selected "enable IMAP" in the settings as opposed to POP which i agree in hindsight is a completely irrelevant point for which making i apologise.

Anyway - on an even more embarrassing note i have now identified why this is happening. It transpires that my shi**y blackberry (which i am issued with by my employer and do not use through choice) is set to delete entire message conversations instead of individual messages which needless to say means that includes sent items. problem solved.

so i will get my coat and leave on this one.............  sorry to waste your time both and thanks again for your kind input.
