Is there a way to keep the labels on the left panel sorted in the
order of unread messages - such that the labels which have unread
messages are on the top.

I use a netbook with a small screen and have to keep scrolling down
the list to check for new messages in the labels.

Any suggestions on how to keep the labels sorted ? Is there a theme
which supports this feature.

Thanks
Sen

There is no way to sort the list of labels, but you can have Gmail hide any labels that don't have unread messages in them.  If you go in Settings > Labels, each label will give you three options: Show, Hide, Show if Unread.

The best way to handle that is to only show the label when there are unread messages, that can be done under the drop down label settings.

Why gmail is a very long way from replacing Outlook.

You can turn label display in the left panel off, except if unread, so only the ones with unread will be displayed.  Then you get a "more" type link to view them all for when you want to; but it's easiest just to put the label name in the search bar if you need to view a particular label.
