I read that Gmail ignores capitalization and dots in usernames.
However...

Recently I replied to an email and when I looked back at the email I sent, by HOVERING my mouse over the address info withOUT clicking on the drop-drown menu list of recipients & sender, it showed the username in lowercase.  Then when I clicked on the drop-down menu list of recipients and sender, the same email address had the 1st initial capitalized.

For example, hover = john...@gmail.com and click on drop-down menu list = John...@gmail.com
(I even noticed that in contacts, the 1st initial is capitalized too)

For me this is particularly confusing that both "hovering over" and "drop down menu list" do not have the same appearance because then I wonder if my emails are being sent to the correct username address.

The browser I'm using is Google Chrome.

Thank you in advance.
Julie

Only the one username exists (which is what was meant by ignoring case and periods).  In fact, all e-mail servers ignore case.  While on some systems the case might matter in a user-name; it never does in an e-mail address.

What you observed is likely the difference between how your friend logs into gmail, and how their from address is configured (like on iPad mail it would always capitalize the first letter).
