So ... I have two POP accounts being checked since the introduction of
the new tool earlier this year. One of them recently began displaying
a strange delay in checking for new mail. This is causing a backup of
mail on that POP server.

This is what the 2 accounts look like now:

a...@xyz.com
Last checked: 17 minutes ago. View history Check mail now
1...@789.com
Last checked: 18 hours ago. 200 mails fetched. View history 254 mails
remaining

Notice that the second account hasn't been checked for 18 hours and
the "Check Mail Now" link is missing so I can't force it to check.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

I don't use the POP fetcher (I prefer forwarding as it usually means
the mail makes it more quickly into my GMail), but I believe that link
disappears if there was a problem with the last retrieval, which will
result in it no longer retrieving.

View History and see if there is a report of a problem, and if you can
correct it.

Thanks Zack ... You may be right ... but the history doesn't really
tell me anything except the fact that it was entire week between the
last two retrievals. Very strange.

I may have to go back to forwarding. That's what I was doing before
the 'fetcher' was released.

<heavy sigh>

What it does tell you is that there was a problem and that it may need
your attention. It's a waste of Google's resources to continuously
check email for a system that's not working properly. It's like trying
to push when the door clearly says pull.

maybe I woke up grumpy Brian, but, sheesh.."It's a waste of Google's

check email for a system that's not working properly" ???
it'd maybe be a nice touch if gmail/google said "there is a problem"
and then define it so a person could fix it if its something they can
work on. not just stop doing the job offered.

I don't know how Google displays the error as I am not using POP or
forwarding with Gmail. What I wrote was not meant to be offensive, but
to just state clearly that if something doesn't work three times in a
row (or however many times Google tries before giving up), it probably
won't work on the fourth try either. If Zack (Doc) is correct, you
should be able to see if the mail checker is working through the
history.
