Does anyone have a solution to forwarding an email to multiple
contacts? Why can't I just add an e-mail address by clicking in the
"to" field and choose the recipient i want?

The only solution so far is to open a second browser, go to contacts,
select the contacts I want, hit send to create an addressed-blank e-
mail, copy the addresses, and paste them in the "to" field on the
original forward-ready message - there has got to be an easier way.

Please help!!!

I don't like this system either.  Does anyone know if GMail is ever going to go to a system like Yahoo or Hotmail has?

Is my gmail different to everyone else? I have a "Choose from
contacts" list under the "To" field. I'm using the new version of
gmail.

Adrian, can you give us a screen shot of that? I don't have that yet.

Wow - on closer inspection, it looks like gmail for domains got something before normal gmail. My normal account doesn't have this yet either.

Here's the screenshot:

Actually, GAfYD has had that all along AFAIK. It ties in heavily with
shared address books.

I wonder why Google hasn't pushed that out to everyone. It would solve
all the "I hate autocomplete" problems some people have.

This is a feature of GMail for Your Domain, Google Apps, GFYD.  Google Domain Mail account that have contact sharing enabled will see this.  You have a common shared address book of all the users on that domain, but your address book is not shared.

What happens when I enable contact sharing?

Contact sharing is currently available for all Google Apps domains (Exception: Not available for those using the Partner Edition).

Enabling contact sharing creates a shared address book which includes all users at the domain. Contact sharing does not allow users to share their personal contacts with each other. At this time the shared address book is only accessible in the US English version of the mail interface. To use the shared address book to send a message, follow these steps:

  1. In your mail account, click on Compose Mail.
  2. Click on Choose from contacts below the To: field to bring up your shared address book.
  3. In the pop-up window, you'll see a list labeled Most Contacted, which contains your most frequently used contacts. To see a list of all your personal contacts, click on All Contacted. To send to people on these lists, simply click on all the contacts you want to send to to add them to the To: field below. Note: These lists are both propagated from your personal contacts. If your account is new, these lists may be empty.
  4. To send to a user at your domain who isn't included in your personal contacts list, simply type the first few letters of their first name, last name, or username into the search box. You can also search for a nickname or email list. When your desired contact appears, click on the name to add that contact to the To: field.
  5. When you've added all the contacts you wish to send to, click Done to compose and send your message to the selected contacts.
  6. Once you've sent to a contact from your shared address book, they'll be added to your contacts list. The next time you want to send them a message, their email address will auto-complete as you begin to type it.

Your mail account will auto-complete the names of users at your domain when you begin to type them in the To: field while composing a message.

For help setting up this feature, check out our entry on how to enable contact sharing.

Have a peaceful day,
Bill

I think they might be, but I also think it's been because it's so tied
to shared contact lists. With the shared contact list, you don't
always see everyone when you click on contacts, but the search/select
box you get from "Choose from Contacts" will search the shared list
and bring results from there.

I think it MIGHT be coming, because Google
Docs/Spreadsheets/Presentations has it now.

How is it a waste of time?  I find it much faster to just type in "mik" and have "Mike" show up instead of scrolling through a big list of people.

When you think of sending someone an email, just start typing that person's name or email address...Whether you are using a list or autocomplete, you still have to think of who you want to send the email to.  The difference is that with autocomplete, as soon as you think of the person you can almost instantly add them.

Think of people that have hundreds of contacts.  They are writing an email for Ashley Anyname.  Since contacts are listed alphabetically, she would be somewhere near the top of the list.  Now as you are adding her, you think that Wendy Lastname would also like to read this.  This causes you to have to scroll though possibly hundreds of people to get to the Ws of your contacts.  But now, while you are scrolling for Wendy, you realize that Brett Othername would benefit from this email as well.  So now, you have to go from the Ws and scroll all the way up to the Bs...  However, with autocomplete, you would type "ashl [enter] wen [enter] bre [enter]" and have all three of them receiving the email probably in less time that it would have taken to first find Ashley in the list.  Of course, that is an extreme example, but I'm sure that there are some people that this scenario is true with.

With autocomplete, the only scrolling or selecting you have to do is if you have more than one contact with the same first name.  But in that case you could use their email address...

I just got on board with gmail so I would assume this is the latest
version and I don't have it. Also, the link to the page you have below
does not work anymore, so can't see it. I would kill to be able to
forward and pick contacts! How stupid is this that they don't do it
that way when every other email program does?

Hi Ebeth

I just got on board with gmail so I would assume this is the latest
version and I don't have it.

The clarification earlier in the thread is that it comes with  Google Apps for Your Domain. If you have your own domain name (or are willing to get one), you can sign up here
http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/index.html

Also, the link to the page you have below
does not work anymore, so can't see it.

Sorry about that. I put the screenshot on a website I wasn't using much, and pulled it down recently.

I would kill to be able to
forward and pick contacts!

There is a cost involved in getting a domain name, but it has fewer complications than killing someone.  ;-)

Selection of addressee by clicking on a member of your contacts list
and selection by autocompletion of typed addressees are not mutually
exclusive--why can't we have both?

We (pretty much) all agree that they aren't mutually exclusive. No one
is saying you can't have both, we're just saying the option does not
exist *yet.*

Yes, we need both. Using autocomplete with a bunch of people is a
pain. I have to think of everyone individually when normally I can
look at my list and decide who I want to send it to. I'll forget
certain people and tying in each letter for each name is way more time
consuming than checking a box next to the name.
On another topic, does anyone know why when I forward an email from
Outlook that has the pics in the body of the email that the pictures
are not in the Gmail? Am I missing a setting?

I am not a newbie except to Gmail and for the life of me I cannot
figure out how to forward things to my friends. I always used BBC in
Outlook Express but my new server Windstream allows very little
storage. When we were on the road I decided to use my Gmail address
but this forwarding has me stumped. Why can't I just forward and add
my addresses? Do I have to compose then get addresses? Then how do I
put the email in I want to Forward? This is driving me
nuts....yikes, Can someone help me?

I, also, don't have that feature yet. Also, I couldn't view the

Sorry, I took that gallery down a few weeks ago.

I've just uploaded the screenshot here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/adriantry/Screenshots/photo#5182307029052541586

The "Choose from contacts" link is seen courtesy of Google Apps for Your Domain.

A few additional links are seen due to the recently installed Firefox extension, GTDinbox.

There was another discussion in this group on this topic last month
(topic was called "cc/bcc" if you want to read the posts). While some
were extolling the virtues of auto-complete (or auto-address), I
expressed what you did, ebeth. Without a contact list, I would have
to virtually memorize all my contacts' names. It is too time-
consuming to go through the alphabet to come up with the names, via
auto-complete, to send a particular message to. This is threefold if
you want some of your contacts to be in the "To" field, others in the
"cc" field, and still others in the "bcc" field.

But there may be someone you'd send to whose name you don't think of
at that particular time. With a list, you'd be reminded.
