i've been using gmail for a long time. there is a new system. the new
system keeps filling in and correcting things i do not want.
especially i have problems when i am writing a "reply". can this
function be stopped? can i go back to the old system?

Hi Gil

Please don't take this the wrong way.
If you don't describe your problem in sufficient detail, including what platform and what browser you are using, then do not expect much help, especially when you can't be bothered to press the SHIFT key every now and then.

What "new system" are you talking about? It actually sounds like it
may be your browser, but describe the behavior a bit more. What sort
of thing does it correct?

Sounds like "correct as I type" variety of function, called by different names in different.browsers or OS. It's now a common setting option. Have you recently updated/upgraded your browser?
Not knowing your browser or exactly the behavior you're experiencing, it's hard to say much more that would be relevant.
Google also has some settings like "make suggestions" as I type, so it is worth a look through your google settings, if your gmail account is associated with a google account.

If you are typing in the Reply box when you see this happening, or
when composing a new email, I'm guessing it is a feature of your
Internet web browser, not from Gmail.

If you see it happening within the "Search Mail" box near the top of
the screen ... that one is a feature of Gmail, and I fear we may be
stuck with it. It is horrible. But it's been like that for a long
time now. I don't know if there is a way to defeat it (I haven't
found one yet).

Hi Sarah

Here's a little tip for you... One can often glean a fair amount of information from email headers. See 'Show original' in the dropdown next to the Reply button.
From Gil's email, theres is this one:
X-HTTP-UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_6_6; en-us)
 AppleWebKit/533.19.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.3 Safari/533.19.4,gzip(gfe)
From this line we can tell that he is using Safari 5 on a Mac.
User-Agent: G2/1.0
From this line we can tell that he is using Gmail.

Ciao
