i depend on snippets to be accurate.. until today, they always
matched...
that is not the case today.

i am noticing this in emails that processed thru a list..

I have found that in a thread from a LIST, that the most recent
unopened post does not display the snippet.
THE ORIGINAL post's snippet shows...
this is a change from a day ago...

In my experience with the snippets (and this has been true for as long
as I have paid attention to them), the snippet is from the oldest (or
first) unread message in the thread. It is from the most recent post
only if that is the only unread one.

That still seems to be true, for me. I have not noticed a change.

If the message is either HTML, or has something "quoted" near the top
of the message, the text in the snippet might not match what is
displayed when you open that message.

i agree with you in the conditions
I have seen a change tho.. it occurs on emails from a mailing list... .
 not one on one mail...

keep a watch...

my next tests will be to watch which kind of list.. yahoo groups or traditional googlegroups

Most of my email conversations are from mailing lists. Haven't seen a
change in that yet.

I have opened the original.  a second comes in, the original snippet shows..
not the unopened one...
keep watch...
It was a fluke that I even caught it..
I often delete the original emails in a thread too and keep those that follow with the content forward... I dont need incomplete conversations..
I am looking...

Are you sure you're not just looking at cached entries?  Since GMail made offline a "normal" function for everyone, they do even more caching than before, so until you get a refresh, the snippet would only be what it previously said.

pretty sure... but of course, always a possibility...

an example has come up..
in a thread of 8, I have 7 n the trash.
have one in the inbox..
all have been opened...
the snippet of the one in inbox is numbber 5 of those in the trash...

this is from a rootsweb.com mailing list which is plain text.
Some of those in the thread carry forward the previous email, some
writers cleanse them...
Now I know I am not seeing things and know my somment to be true and
existing..

I do expect snippets to be accurate.
hope this is fixed...

got one..
a thread of 8 posts...
all from ROOTSWEB.COM lists = plain text...

the email of the 8th is in my inbox.. its snippet displayed is of the
an email that was opened but it is not, not the first of the emails...
7 are in the trash. The snippet is from the 5th...
ALL were opened.

I did not reply to any these. Not all of the emails carry forward the
content that is being replied to...
some, not all...
