Hi,

I have been given a "googlemail.com" address without having asked for
it
- WTF ?!?

The registration of the new address has taken place from Germany.
However, I am not German, and I have no connection whatsoever with
their legal dispute concerning the domain "gmail.com" or the name
"Gmail" generally.

I strongly dislike the outlandish "googlemail" crap.

HOWTO change it to sth decent, like "gmail.com" ???

Everyone knows gmail. No one knows WTF googlemail is.

As for now, the very same username with gmail.com seems to work. All
mail to my user is correctly routed to my account independently of the
domain. But the account itself has only googlemail.com in its domain,
so that everyone gets my mail from "googlemail" ! When answering to it,
the use of "gmail.com" results in the mail being redirected to my
account.

If it is so, it must be possible to cancel this redirection (?) to
googlemail.com (or the other way round) and work straight with the
right address all the time: both sending and receiving. It must also be
possible to get the account settings straight, so that it is wholly
assigned to the domain "gmail.com", and only to the domain "gmail.com".

The question is: HOW do I get it done ?

Yours,
YBK

Googlemail is Gmail in the UK and Germany due to a copyright problem.  If email is sent to yagotta at gmail dot com, then it will still be sent to your address.  If you really don't like it, then just tell people that you have a gmail address.  No one will know the difference until you send them something and it says it's from googlemail.

You say that you registered from Germany, well, that's your problem.  How does Google know that you're not German?  You should not have registered until you were in a county that allows gmail addresses.  If it aggrivates you that much, cancel your account, and wait until Google recycles the username and re-register somewhere that allows for gmail.  If you can't, then find a proxy that is located in the US and trick the Google servers into thinking that you are from the US.

How can you say that no one knows what googlemail is?  If anything, I would say that more people would know of that than Gmail.  Googlemail is self-explanitory.  It's mail that Google offers.  The G in Gmail could stand for many things if you never heard of Gmail before.

In short, now that your account has been registered as a googlemail account, there is nothing you can do to change that without canceling it.

It has to do with a German company who sued Google in Germany over the
use of the name G-Mail (they already hold some sort of copyright
there). Using the @gmail address should work for you the same.

I am not sure this will work cause it seems outlandishly simple.

After logging into your account myad...@googlemail.com, Just add
myad...@gmail.com as your additional address. (under
settings/accounts). Gmail will sent a confirmatory e mail which will be
received by you @ your googlemail id (myad...@googlemail.com) . Click
on the link to verfy the address.

Go back to settings and set myad...@gmail.com as your default id and
then select always reply from my default id.
