Couple that with the frequent requests for invites that pop up in
groups like this, and have to be moderated out because the people fail
to read the "About" page and go to an appropriate page to get an
invite. This tells me that these people are having a hard time
signing up, despite the multitude of invites and additional methods
provided.
Further, I think it's a good idea to keep them because it makes it
more difficult for spammers to create a gmail account (not impossible
obviously, but more difficult), and gives Google an easy way to track
them back to the source, and further complicate it for them. (IE, if
your invite is used to create a spammer's account, your invite
capability is limited, and if your address was used to receive an
invite that was turned into a spammers account, you're no longer able
to receive invites).
Also... this forum is proof that Google's idea of e-mail, does not
agree with what "everyone" wants. Some people are heavily invested,
and personally interested in keeping their e-mail in a form they've
used before. For this reason, if they did create an account, they
might abandon it and never use it. This creates waste that google
currently has less of a problem with. Everyone I've invited has
conscientiously decided to try this "new way of doing e-mail" so
they're less likely to cut and run at the first sign of trouble.
Just my thoughts...
