I'm used to Gmail's UI being pretty intuitive, or at least include all the features I'm used to from other webmail, so I'm stumped by this...

I created a filter and checked a number of items in that filtered view, more to count them than to do anything in particular with them. There were about 60 checked intems going back a few months.

Those items are all still checked, even though I've left the filter view. I don't want them checked, so I went to find the "uncheck all" function, usually at the top of the checkbox column on most applications. It's not there. I can't find it anywhere. How can I uncheck all of the scattered, checked items without recreating the filter and going through and unclicking each item?

The "Uncheck all" option only appears when you have at least one checked message on-screen (that is, on the page that is in the window, even if you need to scroll down to see it).

Anyway, "Uncheck all" doesn't uncheck every message.  It only unchecks those that are currently on-screen.  If there are other checked messages not currently on the page, they would remain checked.

But not to worry.  Checked messages do not stay checked forever.  If you log out from your Gmail account, it clears all the checked messages.  You start fresh every time you log in.

"Uncheck all" is actually labeled "None".

Andy rightly states that you should have none checked if you log out then back in.  Also, clearing cache and cookies will often clear "checked" messages that aren't checked anymore (I've seen that)... finally, to clear it without logging out... I use Select All, then the link that selects multiple pages... then just navigate to another page; that always ensures I have "0" checked messages anymore.
