I recently went over my storage limit while away for a week. I checked
and my Trash was full up to almost my MB limit.

I thought that:

1 Trash didn't count towards the limit.
2 Trash automatiocally deleted after 30days (there is mail there back
to febuary)

On attempting to manually delete the mail in trash i find I have to
select one screen full of messages at a time. There are over 10000
messages in my trash.

Is there no "empty trash" option?????

No there is no "empty trash" option, and they are not automatically deleted.  Since they also "do" count towards your storage quota, I guess that this will be happening to more people over time.

They are supposed to be deleted. I recently read a report from a
Google employee on the Gmail team that they are working on the
problem.
