1000 is already far too generous. The signature shouldn't be larger
than the message. The way around it to use a local mail program.

On what basis does one conclude that the 1000 character limit on
signatures is too generous or that another person's signature
shouldn't be larger than the message?

I wouldn't necessarily say "too generous", but it is very generous.
Common etiquette states you want a signature to be simple short and
relay necessary information. I've seen people put entire disclaimers,
but I don't know of anyone that ever read them as a matter of course,
and I HAVE heard of people trying to use them in court, where they
didn't hold up.

It's important to keep in mind that GMail's "signature" is just the
automated placement of a signature. If you need an extra large
statement like that, it makes sense to keep it in a text file then cut
and paste it in each time it's needed. I assure you a signature
longer than 1000 characters will not pass moderation into most forums;
so I wouldn't want my auto-signature to be the long one for that
purpose.

A reasonable size for a signature is small. The largest reasonable
signature I've ever seen was 5 lines long. Assuming a 72-character
line, that's a total of 360 characters. Also, it's obnoxious to see a
message like:

> I agree.

> This is the signature that never ends.

> Okay, here's my life story.

Agreed that a signature must convey the essence of the signer, not his
or hers mission statement or executive summary.
Antoher signature request I have is to be able to have the email and
URL in color.
Any ideas?

Gmail can't do this for you, but the receiving person's client will
almost certainly convert them into links, which will color them.

I could suggst a go around. Make a jpg file of what you need in your
signature an attach it every time you need it. I do this alot. I have
many yahoo groups and websites that I want certain people to see. and
instead of putting all in my signature, I upload a jpg I made.

Thanks to all posters. I learned a lot-- as I often do in this group.

Thanks Ryan; in the past, I "colored" the links in my
signature.....................

Happy New Year,
