For several years I have been using gmail drafts to store important
information and notes to myself. I currently have about 1600 drafts.
I have read a few horror stories of users losing their drafts because
of a glitch at google. For me, this would be devastating. I searched
the Gmail-Users posts to see if this specific issue was addressed by
anyone, and I could find nothing. Can someone recommend a solution?
Incidentally, I would be glad to pay Google for this service!

I use Google Notebook for such purposes, it's free and online and made for taking notes, not storing e-mails.

It's also worth noting that while there are horror stories out there, the majority of them are often the fault of the user doing something horribly wrong (bypassing multiple levels of "are you sure" type prompts) and the number of reports of legitimate problems vs the number of actual users, puts the percentage of problems extremely low (lower than 1% I'd estimate based on my own, non-scientific, research into number of complaints vs predicted user base).

While you're still in the "draft" phase, you can always use IMAP access to get the data offline to your local system, then you have a true backup of what you have online.

Zack,
Thanks for pointing me toward IMAP. I'll give it a try!

Incidentally, I once tried Google Notebook and decided it wasn't a
good fit for the way I keep notes. For one thing, Google Notes does
not allow attachments, which many of my notes have . Also, some of my
"notes" are extremely long, as when I'm taking notes for a class over
a period of several months. I like to pop up my gmail draft in a
separate window -- again something I can't do with Notebook. The
implicit notion of "note" in Gmail Notebook is, I think, that of a
quick short note/reminder to oneself with maybe some links and little
else.

Try evernote, it supports attachments.

I recently backed up all my gmails and it seems that the drafts [I
have nearly 3000] are backed up as well.
I did this as Google started behaving extremely unreliable by removing
Groups without any explanation!!
Use for this
http://www.gmail-backup.com/ .............reasonable simple to use
you may then want to save the backup on a disc, incase of computer
problems.
good luck

Use Gmail Backup to keep a complete (backup) copy of all the contents
of your mailbox. It's currently free, but isn't sourced from Google.
But not it is NOT a working copy that can be used Offline. It is a
genuine Backup, which can be restored to a Gmail mailbox in the event
of a major loss.
