Is there a way to save email messages permanently -- if not in gmail,
then in a folder on my computer?

Enable POP in your account and use a mail program like Outlook or Thunderbird to download your emails via POP.

Ummm... Don't delete them? That would save them permanently in Gmail...

On the other hand, to save them to a folder on your PC, the simplest
way is probably to POP them with Thunderbird, Outlook Express, or
something similar.

As long as you don't delete anything in GMail, technically they will be permanently stored.  However, as with EVERY computer, there is a risk of some disaster happening and data being lost.  Using POP to download a backup copy of your emails to your computer will help should anything happen to Google's servers.

You could also set up another web-based email account (e.g. hotmail or
Yahoo) and forward all your GMail to that account. That way, both the
Google and other company's servers would have to fail for you to lose
your "saved" emails.

Would you accomplish this by setting a filter to forward all e-mails
sent to your Gmail account to also go to your second e-mail account?

That's how I do it.

this seems to me the most logic answer!!
POP is always a problem, because you loose everything with a computer
breakdown and the like.
Or you have to constantly back up the POP, a "headache" you can avoid
when you leave the mail on the server and as suggested forward the
mail to an extra e-mail address.
i wander why people still use POP service ,especially when opening an
e-mail in g-mail goes as fast as in a POP mail.

Okay, Worth, I see we've both participated in threads here also
touching on filters. So can you tell me how to set up a filter for
miscellaneous messages from Gmail-Users. Andy gave me pretty good
info in the auto labels conversation; do you have anything to add or
clarify? And do I input my own edress in the To: field? Sseems like a
"no brainer" but I want to be sure so I can finally try it. Thanks
from Dodo.

I think Andy's ideas re a "listid" filter cover it if by
"miscellaneous" messages from the Gmail-Users Group you mean all such
messages. To recast what I said in my earlier post, I think trying to
filter various subject areas covered by this group is tough--people
come up with subject lines that don't really address the issues
succinctly or (sometimes) accurately and threads often wind up
diverging, often interestingly and usably, from the original
subject. If you still want to try, I'd suggest leaving out the
subject line in the filter form and stick with "has the words,"
setting up a filter for each buzzword you see as a desirable
category. Myself, I'll be using Search This Group. I see no point
in putting your email address in the To line of a filter form, unless
you intend to exclude all emails on which you were a cc or bcc
addressee (which would have no bearing on emails from this group). As
Andy said, you don't need to fill out the whole filter form, just find
the commalities which are unique to the emails you want to have in the
filter. Hope this helps.

Worth, you'll probably read the post where I ask Zack how to set up a
filter for a specific person. Since you use your actual e-mail
address, may I try to set up a filter for your posts? I am guessing I
merely need to include your e-mail address in the From: field. I will
NOT do this unless I have your permission, of course. ~Dodo

While admirable that you're asking permission, you don't need to.

All a filter is, is an automatic search. A search of YOUR GMail
account. You no more need my permission to search your GMail than you
do to search Google on the Internet.

Messages from the group show up in your mailbox as From the poster's
e-mail, and To the list name. But I thought you weren't receiving
e-mailed posts from the group?

You surely have my permission to filter using my address.
