I redirect my work email to my Gmail account, where I have set up a different identity. The other day I deleted my work identity and then attempted to re-create it. It used to be that, by default, you could use the Gmail SMTP server with any identity you owned. This time it didn't seem to be an option. When I set up my identity to use my workplace SMTP server, emails I sent started bouncing -- not all of them, but many of them. Any idea what's going on?

BTW, when I use Postbox I have no problem using the Gmail SMTP with my workplace identity. But Postbox is so slow.

Thanks!

I don't recommend using Gmail's SMTP as you could still run into bounces due to relaying (550 error). So after updating your smtp settings to use your work server, what did the bounce message say?

Ray, here's the latest bounce message:

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the relay smtpauth.neu.edu by smtpauth.neu.edu. [155.33.16.43].

The error that the other server returned was:
Remote server does not support SMTP Authenticated Relay

Weirdly enough, it was working for most of the day and just rejected one.

By the way, Ray: I have no problem using Gmail's SMTP server with my work identity -- I'm able to do it in Postbox and it works fine. So if you know how to make the switch in Gmail, I'd really appreciate a response. It used to be the default; now I don't see the option at all. Thanks.

It would seem that Google have removed the option to use the Gmail SMTP servers for sending using other identities.

Hi, Marko -- Well, that answers my question! And yet I can still do it with my Gmail account using Postbox. But that doesn't help when I'm on a different computer and just want to do email quickly. Not sure why my workplace SMTP settings aren't working, though. Thanks, Dan
