Hi, Group.  I just saw--for the first time--a lock icon next to an appointment on the Google Calendar.  What is that and where did it come from??!  Not my doing, that's certain!  Thanks.  ~Dodo

I've never seen a lock, but any calendar event that has reminders for that specific event has a little clock icon, I could see someone thinking that's a lock...and the repeating items have a series of boxes which are meant to look like they stack on each other.  If you're sure it's not one of these, can you send a screen pick?

I was hoping you'd be around, Zack.  I am familiar with the clock icon for reminders and, to me, it looks like a clock.  I have set 3 reminders for this event:  2 e-mails and 1 pop-up.  This event is not repeating.

I have set other events with more than one reminder but, again, this is the first time I've seen the two icons.  Thank you.  ~Dodo

OK... so I can't find a help page for Calendar that explains them, but I did try some experimentation, and got it, right when I expected to, which explains why I'd never seen it before.

That means you've marked that event as Private (instead of Default, or Public; but perhaps Default too if your Default is Private).  I've never done that before because I only put things on to share, and only share with people I want to see things, so there's no need for Private:

It was less than 15 minutes, Zack!  What took so long?  I don't know anything about Private vs. Default vs. Public, but I see where they are for selecting.  Since this is the first time I saw that lock icon, I have to assume I unknowingly made some change.  I'm confused by those terms, although I read the info you provided.  Since it's just the boss and I who see the calendar, what do you recommend for marking these events?  As always, thank you.  ~Dodo

Given that you only share with the boss... it doesn't matter, except that perhaps keeping Public/Default is best so you don't have the lock to confuse yourself with.

Just prior to reading this post I was reading the same info as the link you provided and experimented with changing the setting to Default, as Zack also mentioned.  So that is a lock icon for Private!!

Question:  "Select this option if you want the event's privacy setting to mimic the calendar's privacy setting."  Where do I set the calendar's privacy setting?

Set as Default/Public - then the lock shouldn't show.
Setting as Private puts on the lock icon - so the event can't be
changed.

"Google Calendar enables you to make all or part of your calendars

Make an event Private
If you've decided to share a calendar with someone, they'll normally
see ALL the events on that calendar.
If you want to make a particular event private, so only you and other
calendar "owners" can see it, you can mark it as a private event.

So you can choose to have a whole calendar open to many people (perhaps even the world), and some events to remain private.  For example, my church maintains a publicly accessible calendar.  But they might have an appointment that only church leaders need to know about, so they make that one private.  Everyone else can see the time is booked, but not what event is happening then.

Misunderstanding.  I didn't ask why but how to set the calendar's Privacy or Default setting as opposed to doing so by event.  I have looked everywhere and don't see where this is done.  In other words, I know how to change the setting per event but not how to make my selection the calendar's default setting.  ~Dodo

The only info I have been able to find is:-
Your calendar information stays private unless you adjust your
calendar-sharing settings.
If you choose to share, you decide who to share with, and which
details they can see.
To ensure that the events on your calendar remain private, just follow
these steps:
In the calendar list on the left, click the down-arrow button next to
the appropriate calendar, then select Share this calendar.
(Alternatively, click the Settings link at the bottom of the calendar
list, select a calendar and click the Share this calendar link.)
Check that the 'Make this calendar public' option isn't selected.
Also, be sure not to add anyone in the 'Share with specific people'
section.
Finally, when creating events, make sure that the radio button next to
either 'Default' or 'Private' is selected under 'Options' > 'Privacy'
on the event details page.
