nope Gmail doesnt use folders.  Think of a label as a folder.  When you are sorting through your inbox, apply a label to the message/messages and then make sure you archive that message.  At first you might think its weird, but trust me, the label system is MUCH better way than using folders.  And you can also apply multiple labels to the same message, where you cant do that with folders, you can only put it into one folder.

For example, I have about 15-20 labels, which are stuff like, Personal, Forwards, Bills & Finances, Work Related, Job Searches, Online Purchases, and Gmail-Users, etc.  It really works out great, and when you archive the messages they leave your inbox so its not all cluttered up.  Hope this helps.

Remember the key is to make so good, pertinent labels, and dont forget to ARCHIVE messages after you label them!

Labels are kind of like folders, what they do is add a little tag to messages.  When you click on the label name, Gmail does a search for the tag assigned to that label and shows you all messages with that tag or label.  What makes labels different from folders is that one message can have many labels.

To set up a label, click Settings > Labels > Create new label

From there, you want to find all the messages you want to be assigned to that label and click the drop down menu More Actions > Apply Label: Label Name

You can also have Gmail automatically assign labels to incoming mail by creating a filter.

Well, I hope this helps.

Label, then archive, and they will behave like folders.

A message thread can have as many labels as you like, and Inbox is
just another label.

Labels are like folders, except you can put it into more than one label
at a time. Just create the label(s) you want, and click the "archive"
button above the email. It will now be in the labels you specified, and
the "all mail" section, but not your inbox. Hope this helps.
