I notice I receive mail from others (not on gmail) that even though it
was sent to a whole bunch of people, I only see a group name or it
says "undisclosed recipients." how can I do that in gmail...some
people don't want their e-mail addresses out there.
and can you please send the answer (besides posting) to me at
Terry...@gmail.com cause I'm not sure I know how I got here!
Thanks,
Terry

I think you can only do this by putting the names in the BCC field
when using Gmail's web interface. There might be other ways to do it
if you access Gmail by POP using an email client such as Outlook,
Thunderbird or Apple Mail.

When you send out messages with all the addressees listed in BCC, you
may need to put at least one address in the TO field. Some spam
filters flag messages where the TO field is blank or has the same
address as that sent the message. To avoid that you can put another
of your email addresses in the TO field and all the recipients in the
BCC field.

If you put everybody's addresses in the BCC field (click "Add BCC"
below the subject line) and nothing in the To line, then the To field
will say "Undisclosed-Recipient"
I've tried it. :)

Right, but if you read the previous threads on this, you'll see that
some spam filters will automatically delete messages with no To line.
So some of your intended recipients may not get the message.

As a safety measure, it's suggested that you list SOMETHING in the To
line. Some people use their own address, but that too can trigger the
spam filters of your recipients. Others, like myself, use a list-serv
address that is valid, so if it's checked, it'll be fine (I'm often
sending to that list also). Thirdly, you can put a valid, but unused,
address in the to line, like "myfr...@spambob.org". If a mail
server verifies this address it'll be told it's valid, but there's not
really any account at spambob.org, it serves as an e-mail blackhole.

It wasn't clear to me whether "myfr...@spambob.org" was intended to
be an working or merely theoretical example. Can I use it for the
stated purpose?

Anything at spambob.org can be used for that purpose. Visit
http://www.spambob.org for more information. Other similar services
exist I know, but that's the first that came to my mind when writing
the below reply. Other readers feel free to post their favorite for
this purpose.
