Hello,

We have several users that have reported that when they print their Gmail (using the print icon within the email in the chrome browser) occasionally they receive some or all the pages blank. Sometimes the first few pages print okay and the remaining pages are blank, and in some cases all pages print blank.  Sometimes an email prints okay and the attachment prints blank, at other times the opposite happens.  Reprinting the email (using the same Gmail print icon) usually results in a correct print job.  We've not been able to consistently recreate the problem. It's quite random.

Multiple users (12) and printers (4) are affected (all since Chrome v42 was released).
All users are on latest Chrome version (42).
Changing printers doesn't help.
Still happens in incognito mode.
Other browsers are NOT affected.
Seems to only affect printing within Google apps (Mail, etc) - printing at other web pages seems to be fine.
Most of the systems having the issue are imacs running OSX 10.8.

All indications point to a problem with the latest Mac version of Chrome, but surprisingly I haven't found any other forums/threads addressing the issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Andy

Hello,

The print preview page looks normal. The issue seems to affect just Google apps, in the latest version of Chrome, on a Mac.
We've had several different users & printers all start having this issue as of last week, and all other print jobs (besides Gmail) to these printers are fine, just Gmail prints blank randomly.

Thanks!
Andy

Andy,

I'm on Windows but when I select to print within Gmail via Chrome, I'm taken to a print preview page before I actually submit to the printer.  Are your users on Mac seeing a print preview page?  If so, is the issue of blank pages there in the preview as well or just in the printed output?

In any case, I don't know if this is a Gmail issue or more specifically a Mac or Chrome or maybe even a printer issue.  I'm not seeing any issues printing from Gmail via Chrome on Windows.

Hello,

I've been working with Google through a different support channel at my work and Google is aware of this problem (with all printing in Chrome, not just Gmail) and working on it. Some alternatives that help are:
1 - Print using the system dialog link on the Chrome print preview page.
2 - Change a print setting on the preview page, such as portrait/landscape, print, then change it back.

I'll post any further tips or updates that I get from Google,

Thanks,
Andy

If you read the thread you will see that the problem is with Chrome, and nothing to do with Gmail.

Hello,

Google is still working on this issue but hasn't released a fix yet.
Here is the latest info I have about this problem:
  • The problem is within Google Chrome - other internet browsers are not affected (Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.)
  • It seems to randomly affect about 0-5% of the print jobs for affected users.
  • It affects Mac & Windows computers with Google Chrome version 42 or later.
  • When reprinting a job that printed blank, the reprint usually works correctly.
  • Printing using the "Print using system dialog" link on the Chrome print preview page seems to be unaffected by this issue (works normally).
  • Some users have reported that changing a print setting like landscape/portrait, printing a document, and then changing the setting back, seems to fix the issue for them. Our own testing on this has been inconclusive.
I will be out of the office from May 22-31 so my next update for this forum will most likely be on or after 6/1.

Have a great day,
Andy

Just in case anyone is still following this thread, Chrome version 43 was released around Memorial Day with a fix for the blank page printing issue.  Our users have found Chrome version 43 to be working as expected.

Thanks,
Andy

Good Morning, same problem here with some page of mine. When someone try to print some pages from my site there is the same problem. Sometimes blank pages, sometimes it prints correctly,  reprinting the email is ok. Quite random... I think it happens from Chrome 42 update... I hope there will be a fix soon...

You and Andy Stanke) should report this problem to Google.

Same problem here.  It just started today.  I'm using Chrome as my browser on a laptop running Windows 8.  I hit the gmail print icon and the correct number of pages print, but they're all blank.

It seems to be a Google Chrome issue.  I first experienced the problem in Gmail.  However, now it is clear that I can't print form any webpage accessed via my Chrome browser, including but not limited to my Gmail account.  I get the correct number of pages when I hit a print button, but they're all blank.

Fortunately, if I exit Chrome and launch Firefox, I can then open Gmail or any other webpage and everything will print properly.

We are experiencing the same issue... multiple users, different printers, Win7Pro and Win8.1Pro.

When printing from Chrome - GMail, PDF viewer, websites, Google Apps - the Print Preview shows correctly, but only blank pages print.

Seems that if I have the user change something in the print preferences - like change the orientation from Portrait to Landscape - the emails or PDF files print again, then we can change the orientation back, and all is good until the user reboots the machine.

Sounds like a Chrome problem, not a GMail problem.  You should try bringing in Chrome feedback.

I started getting the same thing today, windows 8.1 printing anything in chrome. I can print fine from gmail in IE so the chrome issue seems spot on. I did try changing some properties but still blank. It's odd the print preview screen appears fine and displays the information but then the print is blank. Thanks for looking into this Andy

Hi,

I've contacted gmail since we have a payed google apps account and they tell me it's a problem with chrome.

i did something i've read on some other forum, i installed ccleaner and run it and for now it solved the problem, don't know for how long. Before I tryed to reinstall chrome, create new user, try the incognito window and none worked, the preview windows was fine the printed page was blank.

I am having same problem. I have figured a temporary way around the issue for now. You can save to a PDF file and then open the PDF and print it. However that takes more time and is not a good solution. Hopefully they come up with a fix for this problem and get us some answers.
