I have been a gmail user for nearly 2 years. Last night, I signed up
for google checkout under my existing (now "FORMER" gmail account.).
This morning, when I tried to log on to gmail, I was told my username
or password was invalid. I've had the same one for nearly two years
and I didn't "forget" it! I was then told to click "lost password"
and password reset instructions would be sent to my backup email
address. It wasn't. When I queried further and checked "forgot
username" box, I was told that "there is no gmail account associated
with that email address" (which is NOT TRUE).

I then was invited to (and did) set up a NEW gmail account which I am
now using. B ut it caused incredible grief as I have rental
properties and have many ads and existing clients who are expecting to
reach me at my FORMER gmail address.

I can't help but think that signing up with google checkout had
something to do with the sudden invalidation of my password and
username because it was the only "new" thing I did and less than 24
hours later I have no valid password or username and my backup email
is apparently un-recognized by google.

Gmail is NOT userfriendly and I can find no help anywhere and nobody
to emaill to ask why my account was invalidated. I can tell you one
thing: DO NOT EVER SIGN UP FOR GOOGLE CHECKOUT!

I agree with Vijay. I have signed up for several accounts (my main email address and others) and I have never experienced this problem. Where exactly did you get this lost password page? The main Gmail page points you to http://urlet.com/blue.survive for help. None of those pages have a "forget user name" box.

Uh... Ryan... it's the second link "I've forgotten my username"

But I agree, I've never had a problem and I have a Google Checkout
account associated with my primary GMail login. It's very possible
this person was misdirected and got phished.
