I know Zone Alarm somehow is at fault. I followed the using ZONE Alarm
and GMAIL directions (add program, etc) but my computer with Zone Alarm
on it will not allow me to open links directly (often have to right
click mouse to open), nor even edit account changes. But I can do that
on my other two computers without Zone Alarm on it. Any suggestions?
Maybe I should delete GMail and re-install?

What do you mean? Gmail is on the web, you can't uninstall it.
Do you mean you have a general browser problem?

If you've followed all of the instructions at
https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=8836, I would try
disabling ZoneAlarm (for now) just to confirm that the problem is not
something bigger with your computer. If disabling your firewall does
solve the problem then you'll just have to poke around at the settings
for a while. Sometimes they can be finiky.

Or you could take my approach: on my systems, I do not run any
firewalls. Quite honestly, "hackers" don't randomly attack people's
PCs. That's what all the security (and general computer) companies lead
to people to believe, but they do have... how should we put this?... a
motivation for encouraging people to buy their products.

The only reason that I might use a firewall would be to block
connections for spyware reporting your personal data. Even that really
is not as common as legend has it, however. Being careful about the
sites you visit can go a long way towards protecting you in that arena.

followed all the directions exactly, no change. Turning off Zone Alarm
fixed the problem. But is there no way to make it compatible with
GMAIL? Hate to leave it off. Is there a "tweak" I am missing?

No, don't delete your current account. You might have try another one, just to see, but I seriously doubt that it will make a difference.

My advice is to just not use ZoneAlarm, but it's up to you. :)
