I wish... I have it turned off and use scripts to make sure it's turned off.

But seriously, have you checked the links at the bottom to make sure you don't have it turned off, or wound up in the older version.  Also, have you gone through the help section's steps (I saw a couple of steps) to see if they had a result?  Failing that, I found a help section specifically for Google Chat <http://www.google.com/support/chat/>

Same  happened to me several days ago - I logged in and chat was not connected, then it vanished, for about 36hours. It reappeared of it's own accord.
Gmail are not reporting any service status problems at the moment.
I didn't try to fix it; it was just back one time when I logged in; I had logged in and out several times.
In addition to Zack's advice, try the usual clear cache/history/cookies...

I have the same problem when using Google Apps. My chat disappeared
yesterday and hasn't come back since!

I've been looking for answers to this. Here is what I have found.

Some users have found solutions that have worked for them, these are given below.

There appears to be a small number of users who are have problems connecting to chat recently. The problem is mainly reporfted for Google Apps, but not exclusiviely so.
Apps users may find that GTalk has vanished completely, or have trouble logging in.
It appears to be user-specific, in universities and businesses where there are multiple users on the same network, only occasional individuals are affected
So far there does not seem to be any official recognition of the problem.

The only solution presently being offered that I can find is rather odd; but people are reporting that it has worked...Some users have found that performing a password reset solves the "missing chat"  problem. It may take several minutes to 48hours for it to take effect.
Some users have reported a temporary fix by clearing browser cache &  history, or closing and restarting browser, or rebooting machine. (these probably amount to the same thing). It may allow chat to reconnect; but the problem reappears.
Some users also report that they can access chat through Igoogle.

Please be aware that the labs chat version is not compatible with the ordinary chat application. you cannot have both running, they share certain files and it causes conflict.
Uninstalling labs should fix it if this applies to you.

I hope that this is some help to those of you with problems.

It was google apps and it did come back about 2 hours later. I am the
admin for the apps account so I know I didnt disable it. Also, I did
have the correct version of gmail selected.
