If you search this group, you'll see a few suggestions on how to get your desired option.  The first step is to suggest it to google through the suggestion page on the help screens.  The options, until gmail implements it, are to either forward the messages to yourself, with whatever attachments, and change the subject; you can then delete the one with the generic subject.  Or, you can use an IMAP client, like Thunderbird, to edit them directly, as it will change the file on their server.

I have faxes and voice mails automatically sent to my gmail, but the subject is generic like "A fax has arrived from remote ID" or "voice message from outside caller".  I need to be able to edit the subject of the received email so there is some distinction between them in my voicemail or fax labels.  I've used several other email products that allowed subject field to be edited without the need to forward all of these messages to myself a second time so I can change the subject.  This seems like such a simple function to provide, but it's incredibly valuable for locating emails that have been received with generic subjects!

Except the new gmail interface does not allow to edit the subject anymore.

Yes it does, though not as easy to find.  The arrow next to the address, and after your avatar, click the down triangle next to it; to change to reply all, or just reply, and the third option is Edit Subject.

Would creating filters to send each fax to an appropriate label work for you as far as distinguishing between the incoming faxes?
