Hello! I have a question regarding my gmail account. Is it OK if I try to hack my OWN gmail account? I have acces to it but I'd like to try to hack it for education purposes.

Thanks!

LOL, seriously!? I've seen some weird questions on this group before but this one really made me laugh out loud.

No, it is not legal. You would be using malicious code to access a server you do not own. It would violate not only Googles own terms of service, but several laws as well.

I guess he thinks it's ok if he's breaking into his own account.  Maybe he's going to try to guess the answers to his own security questions or something.  :)

Heh, this gave me a nice little fit of the giggles. Thanks for that mate, was having a rather bleak afternoon.

I am actually rather interested in knowing exactly what he wanted to try now though.

Hey Mike

Hacking (or cracking actually) someone's account by attacking Google's custom Linux web servers would probably be futile as the actual information is spread over thousands of different systems all over the world.
One would also have to be highly skilled to find a vulnerability (if one even exists), and avoid detection. I somehow doubt that somebody asking "Is it OK if I try to hack my OWN gmail account?" would have the requisite skills.

The more likely scenario is infecting a user's PC with a keystroke logging Trojan via a malicious website. That is hardly hacking/cracking though.

Hacking is understanding every thing deeply, specially protocols , tcp stack ,ip ,netwoking etc. Just run another person's code are downloaded script is not a hacking

In a literal, semantically correct sense, yes, Dhanushka.  However, in the popular vernacular, hacking is bad, malicious, and involves appropriating others information even through scripted means.  The implication in the original post is the attempt to gain access to an account through means other than simply entering one's normal credentials.  That's the "bad" interpretation of hacking.

Several, but not all, of my friends with Yahoo accounts--and some others--have been hacked multiple times, and I always feel bad about that.  Hence, although I have other accounts (Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail, etc.) for various reasons, those Address Books/Contacts are empty.  I am very confident in gmail.  Whatever they're doing to protect my information is working great.
