Very occasionally (at least for me) Gmail does screw up where the
quote (the replied to part) is, so sometimes random bits are hidden.
Generally speaking though, the "show quoted text" link should only
appear for the the replied to sections, which it assumes you already
know.

If it isn't acting right, there's probably not a lot you can do. I
assume that the quoted section detection is done on the server, which
means that your computer has no effect on it.

   There is a very simple instruction for unsubscribing at the bottom of every single post. Plus, you can always unsubscribe the same way you subscribed in the first place. The moderator can ban you from the list, which accomplishes kind of the same effect, but if he is busy, it might be a while, so you are better off unsubscribing yourself if you have decided that you no longer want to read this list.
