Hello,

Has anyone found out how I can have gmail automatically move my inbox
messages, once read(!), to the respective lables? I.e. NOT how to
apply a filter and then never see the emails in the inbox first. But
move them where they belong ONCE I have read them?

Thanks for reading.

After you read a message, just click the "Archive" button that is
along the top or the bottom of the message. That takes the message
out of the Inbox.

If you also want to attach a Label at the same time, which the message
doesn't already have, use the "Move to" button, which both gives it a
Label and takes it out of the Inbox at the same time.

Keep in mind that Labels are not precisely places to move messages
into. Messages can have Labels and still be in the Inbox. I use
Filters extensively, to give my messages their Labels, and they also
remain in my Inbox until I read or download them. Applying a Filter
does not move a message out of the Inbox, unless you tell the Filter
to do that too.

If this function exists I would use it also.

What would the advantage to this be vs seeing an unread message within its label?

Thanks Andy. With "automatically" I meant:
Can gmail move my inbox emails, once read, to my archive labels
WITHOUT that I have to click anything extra?
Say, I read it, click back to my inbox to look at one of the other
gems, and in that moment gmail knows "Ah, great, David has finished
reading :-)" and shoves the email where it belongs. Possible?

I think the point here is having a rule that moves all incoming email into the proper folder for keeping and later review.  It is a function within Outlook I have used to 10 years and miss having rules.  Another rule I liked was being able to other things like forward and email based on some criteria to another email address.

That's what I'm saying. Instead of the "click back to my inbox",
click "Archive".

You have to do something when you finish reading a message. Make that
"something" be clicking the "Archive" button. It'll shove the email
out of your Inbox.

That is exactly what Gmail's Filters do. The rules that you define in
your Filters, assign Labels to your incoming messages. You can think
of Labels as being similar to Outlook's folders (except that the same
message can have multiple Labels, like being in multiple folders at
once; and messages don't automatically move out of your Inbox when you
give them Labels, unless you want them to).

Guess what? Gmail's Filters do that too!

I had a thoughtful and useful reply here Allan, but unfortunately the
group owner wrongly thought it was inappropriate and he didn't publish
it.
Wrongly, because I intentionally complimented google by saying that
google is smarter than MS.
The group owner seemingly couldn't figure out the difference of this
to what he interpreted, yes interpreted. Sad.

The enhancement I wish they would put in is after you send a reply or forward and email to go back to the inbox without having to click inbox again

If I may, in answer to David's question above, No there is no
mechanism to *automatically* deduce that you have read a message and
therefore remove the Inbox label from one or more messages. Only the
mailbox operator can do that.

You can set up whatever filters you want to apply labels to the
incoming messages: that merely applies the new labels to the incoming
messages, but they retain the inbox label applied by Google when
assigning the message to the mailbox. That only ensures that they will
be displayed when the inbox search is initiated on opening the
mailbox.
When you finish reading a message, since there is no automatic way to
remove the inbox label, as Andy says, you do need to click on Archive
to effect the removal of the inbox label, (or you can click on the X
beside the inbox label at the top of the message!). Doing so simply
removes the inbox label, leaving the message with any other assigned
labels. All messages remain stored in All Mail as before.

Well, I appreciate that you have other wishes too Allan, I only want
to stress the point that
I do NOT want gmail "moving all incoming email into the proper folder"
but to WAIT with this until I have READ IT IN THE INBOX.

On a different note, yes, the feature you describe from Outlook I used
too. And at work we had the same for Lotus Notes.
BUT the problem with that feature was, and is: If you have maaany
folders you often missed to see some fresh emails because they were
now hiding in the folders among other (X) unread emails. (If you get
what I mean)

Hence, the feature I suggested above would be a level cleverer -
which, I feel, suits Google - who are cleverer than MS.
(uuh, will see if this gets deleted ;-)

As one of the moderators to this group, I can disagree with what your saying.  That would not be a reason to reject a message, and I didn't see a message from you like that; so I know it wasn't me that rejected it.

In GMail (and other mail programs besides Outlook) these are called filters.  You can define filters to label, mark read, trash, forward, etc messages.  The only limitation is that they only apply when you receive messages, and, in a limited capacity, when you send messages.

Again, I fully agree Allan.

Andy, you are completely right. I had wrongly associated "Archive"
with a very different functionality which is why I never dared to
click on it. :-)
So, thank you, and also JohnW, very much for the useful help offer!
