Someone just mentioned to me in an e-mail that my version of Chrome could be outdated.  However, it has been my understanding that Chrome automtically updates.  Yet when I went into Settings, I apparently wasn't current and was asked if I wanted to update now (words to that effect).  So I okayed updating, and now under the version number is the statement, Google Chrome is up to date.   That wasn't there before.

Can someone clarify please?

Yes Chrome does automatically update from time to time. If you go into 'About Google Chrome', it will force an update check. If it finds one it will start updating.

Thanks, Marko.  That's precisely what I did (About Google Chrome) and what occurred.

I looked at the latest link you provided which mentioned colors for the Chrome menu at the top right.  Mine always shows black.  I didn't know there were colors.  Does that mean I do close my Chrome browser (which is what I thought I did and want to do)?  However, the info said:  "But if you haven't closed your browser in a while you might see the Chrome menu in the top right change colors . . ."  How can a browser not be closed?  Would that occur when people stay signed on or log off but don't turn off their computers?

Don't know what Google Update is.  At this point, don't know if I want to.

Hey Diane

My desktop computer stays on continuously until we have load shedding and my UPS battery dies (yes, my country is receding into the dark ages) and so, therefore does my Chrome browser with many open tabs. I do sometimes see the 3-bar menu change colour from green to orange to red and then when I feel the urge I close all tabs and upon re-opening Chrome, it is up to date.

Google Update runs as a service on your computer. You don't really need to worry about it though, updates will happen in the background automatically. If you are OCD then you can just check for updates in Chrome yourself from time to time. 😜

Ciao

Gottit, Marko.  Before tonight, I didn't even know I could "force" Chrome to update and was fine knowing that it does so automatically.

Here is an example, I've had Chrome open for several days now on this computer and the bars have turned green, indicating that an update was downloaded and I need to restart Chrome.

And I've never had the bars change colors.  Perhaps I've never noticed it?

You've probably just never left Chrome running long enough. Mine stays open for days, even weeks at a time.

I always do close down whatever programs I've had open before I log off the computer.  Is this an example of Chrome's running in the background?  I have that option off on two of my three computers.  I believe it's on for the notebook computer I take with me (which was how the 2SV issue came up!) because of the days when I formerly used offline Gmail.  I wonder if I should now turn off that feature since WiFi is so available.

My previous paragraph has also prompted this question.  If I were to shut down the computer without closing programs or browsers, wouldn't they be closed by Windows before the computer could shut down?  Uh-oh!  Again, not a Gmail issue.  Rats!

If you are not using it, turn it off otherwise your computer will be downloading in the background, wasting bandwidth and disk space.

Yes, if you shut down your computer then all applications are also shut down.

Rats!? Where, where!?🐀
