Does anyone have a solution for editing the subject line of an email in your inbox?  I don't want to IMAP from an external client -- I would like to do this online within the gmail interface.

My particular issue arises on emails which were originally sent to multiple recipients, but with individual replies related to separate "projects".  I use conversation view (which I find very useful), but this groups all emails with the same subject line.  My thinking is that if I could edit the subject for a specific received reply, I can break that off into its own new conversation.

Editing the subject line would be a useful feature on its own.  Alternately, if there was a specific feature to 'split conversation' or something along those lines...

Hit reply, then click 'Edit Subject' under the To: field.

good luck,

That's fine when I am responding, but my real issue is emails which
were received as replies to the original.

More specifically, a colleague sent an email to a group of clients via
BCC. The separate clients are replying to the original email, with
all of these replies being captured under a single conversation. I
want to move these replies to new threads, but not necessarily create
a reply on my own.

That's a huge issue for me, too. I try to be consistent and descriptive with subjects myself, but my co-workers (my boss, specially)  have a very cute ideas about the use of the subject line... some have no idea at all :D

For me, in some cases, forwarding the offending email to myself with edited subject and maybe some added keywords for future searches works perfectly.

In the case charles.simchick describes, you could slap a unique label on them all, which is not a really good solution but might help in some cases. Problem of course is a ridiculous amount of labels accumulating over time.

My 5 cents: If gmail is serious about the "archive all your mail forever" thing, they really should allow editing subject for an entire conversation. It's a pain when you search for a particular email from a few months or years ago by some remembered word, getting 200 results and having to open each one of them because the subject line is completely unrelated to the email content.

Of course, gmail could also provide a button to fix the sender's attitude towards use of subject lines, but I think that might require somewhat unethical intervention of gmail user's brains...

Cheers, P.

When you hit Reply, you get a box where you can edit the message you
want to send. OK so far?

Above that box, there are buttons for Send, Save Now, and Discard.

Between these three buttons and the box for editing the message, there
is a From: line and a To: line with a box next to it that you can
edit. That is the To: field.

Underneath that, are more options: Add Cc, Add Bcc, Edit Subject, etc.

Andy
