Our organization recommended we try the new Gmail.  I'm finding it very difficult getting accustomed to the changes and feel like it's hampering productivity instead of improving it.  My biggest issue at this point is that the Google Calendar gadget that was available via the Labs Settings is no longer available.  I can find most of the labs features moved to Advanced under Settings, but there's no calendar.  Google does seem to have added a calendar to the right of the screen.  I thought it made much better use of space when the calendar gadget appeared to the left underneath the categories and labels.  Also, the calendar gadget showed me the month, highlighted important days and gave me a synopsis of the next few days appointments.  The new calendar only shows one day and takes up a lot more room to show less information.  Anyone know of any tricks to get the functionality of the old calendar back once we're stuck with using the new look?  Are there any ways to customize the calendar feature or replace the new calendar with a better calendar option?  Any suggestions for improving the usability of the calendar would be greatly appreciated.  I'm very unhappy with the new Gmail changes.  So far, every time Google Mail has been changed, Google claims they are making improvements, but I find the changes only interfere with my efficiency and make it harder to get my work done.  Thanks.

Also, I'm trying to figure out where a key feature for me went. You used to be able to hover over an old email address and could then click the 'emails' link and all the emails from that sending address would show up in a new search. Very helpful and I used it constantly. I'm switching back to old version for now.

Finding all emails from that sending address ...
  • Open mail
  • The second row on the screen has icons. the last one icon is made up of 3 dots, vertically arranged. Click on it and choose 'filter messages like these'
This seems to perform the same function

Try using the calendar from Google apps. that's the 3x3 dots on the top right of the page.

It appears to have the same function as the old one

I am using the Google calendar.  However, it's not as convenient as the gadget and requires a lot more maneuvering and manipulation just to get the same information from it.  Wish they'd make the old gadget available or rewrite something with the same functionality.

Good to hear that other functionality (like the e-mail filtering mentioned) has just been moved or redesigned and hasn't been completely eliminated.  Wish they'd redesign their calendar features yet again and make them more user friendly.  Changing things to look better or be more convenient on mobile devices (or whatever system is the new trend at the time) can make the design worse for desktop access (or older device options) if the designer isn't careful.

Apologies for belabouring the point, but the calendar app from google apps does give day, week, month, year views, etc.

Doesn't the screen shot attached show you the calendar functionality that you are looking for?

Please check this out, I'm not sure if I misunderstood your first post 'shows only one day', etc.docx
