Along with several other users, I would really like to have sub-
labels. I currently have around 70 labels and it's becoming fairly
unmanageable. For example I have several labels for courses I've
helped teach in previous years. I don't want to delete the label
because then they're unfiled, and I don't want to delete the emails
(that's the point of GMail right - never have to delete anything?). So
it would be great to be able to turn those labels in to sub-labels
under one main label named "Old Courses" or some such.
It would be great if it could be made to work so that when you
labelled something with the lowest level label, it effectively got
labelled with the labels above it in the tree as well, so that if I
labelled something "Statistics" it automatically also got labelled
"PhD" and "University" as well. This would mean that I could call up
emails which just fell under the lowest level label, or all emails
which fell under the top level of the tree. But at the same time I
would still have the flexibility of labels because I could also label
some of the emails as "Really Useful" or some such.

I love the sub labels Idea! I'd also like to be able to hide
'inactive" labels without having to delete them. I hate having so many
labels on my screen.

Another approach to the problem of too many labels (including outdated
ones) would be to provide a function where you can show/hide labels.
Hiding a label would sort of be like "archiving" the label---its still
there, but its not visible and in the way.
(Oh sorry KiMay-- I didn't read your post first. You suggested the
same thing.)
One nice additional option for hidden labels would be to automatically
"unhide" them if a new message arrives to one of the hidden labels as
a result of a filter. That way you wouldn't miss it if it skips the
inbox.

Thanks

I love the sub labels Idea too. Hidden labels also help me a lot.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one that would find these
useful. I would love to have sub-labels... of course I am also the
sort of person that has 6 layers of sub-folders on my flash drive for
organization...
Thanks g-mail- keep up the good work!!

Please. Sub-labels would be heaven-sent.

Sub labels and non-active labels would both be nice.

I agree, completely with the concept of sub-labels. As currently
constituted, labels are too cumbersome. The way "Outlook" handles this
issue is much more usable. In other words, what is needed is major
label categories with the ability of setting up sub-labels under any
major label. Without this feature, I will soon have to move to a
different email and that would be a shame.

Very true. The new features on gmail are extremely useful. We could
surely do with sub-labels!

This is one of the features that I think should be one of the first.
We all know that gmail intention is to be a funny email. But first of
all it has to be a funcional tool. Labels were one of the gmail
inovations, and manly features. If you use it, you'll propabbly feel
the need of sub-labels. Becase there are classifications more

I really like the sub labels Idea!
I'd also like to be able to hide "in active" labels without having to
delete them.
I really do not like having so many labels on my screen.

I also support sublabels. It's already being done in google docs.
Please add it to google mail as well!

Can we have sub-labels? I mean that suppose I apply a label 'Friends'
to all my friends' messages. Then I apply a sub-label 'School Friends'
to my school friends' messages and another sub-label 'Other
Friends' .. like this.

Can we have in-built features in Google Chrome for Gmail and other
Google Services.

Ok, I've done some search on the forum and I found (as expected) that
many people would love to have a "hide label" feature on Gmail.

I'll try to summarize some additional functions that were requested by
many users in this forum, and which would go along very well with the
"hide label" Labs feature:

* Re-order labels (currently, you can only order them in aphabetical
order)

* To allow grouping labels, and then being able to re-order and
collapse groups.

* Option to show by default only labels which have unread messages.
One link would expand to show all used labels. After this expansion,
Gmail would show a new link, which would expand to show all labels
(used and unused).

* Another suggestion to make sure that hidden labels don't
accidentally hide new/unread messages. I would like for the hidden
label to reappear/unhide if there is a new unread msg to it (this
assumes that the label is automatically applied through a filter).
That way you wouldn't lose a new msg that went to an "archived/hidden"
label.

The "hide label" feature has been requested and discussed many times
in this forum. A few examples are:

So, why does Google still refuse from adding this feature?

Ya I was also wondering why, these features(or at least some) are not
implemented. They would save hours of work for many !!
