I would like this feature too.  I switch between conversation view on and off quite regularly and a "quick toggle" button would help.

Regards,

Warren.

I agree.  I would like this as well, and it may help to get new users to understand how conversation view is designed, especially for those who are used to replying to messages at the top, so that the last reply is always listed first.  Being able to toggle this would be great.  (Also in the Gmail Android app :-)

I second the motion.  I love conversation view, but I need to change it all the time so I can "go back in time" to see what was said and when.  It's hard to backtrack when you were doing what if the dates of the messages are all hidden within the conversations.

I would like this, too. I normally prefer conversation view but sometimes want to turn it off, like when I want to be sure only part of a conversation is forwarded to someone else.

Another vote for Toggle Conversation View On/Off, especially since it is not always accurate as to what is a conversation.

I'm surprised this thread has gone silent for so long. This feature would make it a lot easier to manage my work email, because the conversations can really stretch on.

Yes, it'd be INFINITELY better than the many-click cha-cha.

As others have said (in this thread and another), the big use case here is search.  When I want to find the newest email from Charlie with an attachment, or from Charlie to Janet, it does me NO good to show me every CONVERSATION.

This puts in me in an annoying "what are the odds?" guessing game.  If I guess wrong and the answer's *relatively* easy to find, I've wasted the time going in and out of settings twice.  But if I guess wrong, don't go into settings, and hope I'll find it with more rummaging and don't, then I've wasted time that way.

So basically every time this comes up it puts me in the annoying position of knowing that the lack of a technologically simple feature means there's a good chance I'm going to waste some time because of difficulty searching.  From Google??  Are you kidding me??? :-)

(If there were a KickStarter campaign for this feature, I'd go pitch in $100 right now.  I'm not kidding.)

I Very much agree. It is much easier to search for an email if conversation view is off. Otherwise you find many long chains of emails that you need to search through. Please add a button to allow easy switching!!

This feature is not developed, so I've found an idea instead of the toggle button.

Open gmail with 2 tabs of browser.

One tab is for conversation view on and the other is for off.

Both settings seem to be distinguished.

+1 This would be very helpful.

A semi decent work around for me. I don't mind the conversation view for the inbox, but I prefer the non conversation view for sent mail. If you open two different tabs one for inbox and one for sent mail and then change the settings for sent mail to conversation view off. It seems to remember that. Then you can close both tabs, and when you switch between inbox and sent the views are different. Might be a glitch, but that's working for me right now.

I need a quick toggle. I normally LOVE conversation view and Gmail's implementation is the best there is, but there are some specific cases where I need to quickly toggle it off or on.

For example, I get automated reports for my employer's HFC network when there is noise affecting a particular node. I have these alert messages automatically labeled and filtered by node. The subject line contains the node and the current signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). When there is noise or interference in a node, I get multiple updates with a graph image showing the SNR. I need to forward/backward through those messages and see the graph as it changes over time, but I find that often messages get grouped together because the subject line happened to be identical (with the same SNR level). In addition to breaking the chronology as I step through, Gmail hides the graph image in all threaded messages except the first one as if it was duplicate content, but each image is actually slightly different from the previous one and I need to see them. It's tedious to expand every "[...]" and it's tedious to toggle conversation view off and on every time I need to analyze these.

An excellent solution would be: A Gmail "lab" option that adds a "toggle conversation view" button to the top of the page. It would simply toggle the same option that already exists in Settings.

It sounds like there's not much hope that Google will see the demand and provide the option, but I just wanted to add my voice to this.
