I like seeing my contacts displayed like so:

First Name, Last Name

However, sorted in the list by:

Last Name, First Name

Is there a way to add this by labs? I've not found an option in Gmail
to do this yet...

I agree! ...and it seems like common sense so I can't image why this
isn't the default anyway.

Add another person who really wants this feature.

Why isn't this the default?

Also, will a Google lab work on the Tmobile G1?

Add yet another person who wants this feature.
Please make it an option to store separate lastname and firstname
entries.
This limitation is a barrier for folks to comfortably switch from
hotmail to gmail.

I want more sorting options not only in the contact list, but
everywhere. The whole contact list needs the most improvements though.

I agree--not only should contacts be sortable by last name, but also
by e-mail address as well. Better yet, how can we synchronize outlook
with gmail, without just overwriting one or the other?

Wake up guys...been around for NINE years...Do you still hope for Google to look into it??
Plus, now (in 2017...) it can be done!!!

(copy/paste from an old posting)
It has been asked by thousands of Gmail users, since 2008 - the year this forum was established.
Ignored by Google;-(
In case you think someone from Google monitors this forum, take a look at:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/gmail-labs-suggest-a-labs-feature/Wz55gyU03h4

So, keep on asking/+1/begging/pleading/cajoling/threatening, you never know...BUT, don't hope for a miracle :-)

Or just Google your question!!!
