It would be great to be able to hide old labels that aren't needed
often.

Agreed. In the short term, you can move those to the bottom of your
list by adding a Z to the front of the label name.

Seconded! (Thirded?) I've been wishing for this feature for a while,
as someone who will be moving on to a new career very shortly. Being
able to "retire" older labels will keep the interface easier to use.

(fourthed?)

Would be great to retire labels from jobhunts, wedding stuff, etc.

I'm not sure what this would entail? Just removing the label? or
removing all messages with the label

By being able to hide label, I can still easily find my archive
related to that label if I need it in the future.
But, since I won't need it in the near future, I feel like hiding it.
Too many labels on the label list makes it hard for me to find the
labels that I often use at the present time.

So a filter box for Labels?

Yes, I agree please add a "Show" option that could hide the label from
the sidebar, actions menu and IMAP folders.

The options for each label would be:
1. Show in Sidebar
2. Show in Actions Menu
3. Show in IMAP

This wouldn't be a destructive setting in that the label would still
be associated with the messages on which it was placed. Likewise, it
would also not hide the messages that have that label.

I would also like to cast my vote for this feature. It's a pain to
have infrequently used labels mixed in with frequently used labels.
The quick search feature now found in the labs is pretty helpful.
Still screen real estate is a premium, and it would be better for the
handful of most popular used labels to be available with a quick
click. Also, I'm not a fan of clutter, and infrequently used labels
seem to add to the clutter. Finally, when I create a label, I usually
create a filter for it as well. When I delete the label, after a
period of not using it, I keep the filter, so a year or two from now,
if I need it, I can still search for it using the saved filter.

I think this is very nesssary as I am depending on gmail more and
more. Hiding labels on the side is a must. I would say, at least the
ability to manually sort them.

But also, I would like to have lables act like filters. by that I
mean, they allow you to display/hide messages in your inbox. lets
assume I have 10 labels three of which are 'L1', 'L2' and 'L3'.
Currently there is no way of seeing all these three labels together
(using search maybe). Nor there is a way to hide those messages with
labels (in inbox or 'All Mail' ).

I sometimes use labels to act like tags and sometimes to act like
folders. I think further control on labels would enable us to utilize
these two concepts without dramatic change.

Any thoughts ?

I agree on the general principle in this thread - hiding labels is a
must. I don't want to have to combine label contents then lose the
original labels I flagged emails with, should I need them in future.

I agree with everything that everyone said and hope that in the
improvements that are being made to labels, the hiding of them will be
possible.

It would be a huge improvement for the Gmail team.

Adding my voice for this feature. I've wanted it for a while now.

I do contract work and it is very bothersome to see a bunch of labels
for old jobs cluttering up the sidebar and label dropdown. I still
need to keep those labels so I have all my old work properly sorted,
but I have no need to see them in the interface anymore.

4. Show on subject line in conversation list
5. Show in conversation view

Also, a default for new labels would be excellent.

Yes, this is a great feature, please do add a filter to the label list
so that every label is not listed, I presume that wouldn't be
difficult.
