Hello,

It seems that Gmail Lab's Gestures gets in the way of right-click
context menu. After selecting text with the primary mouse button, the
secondary mouse button ("right-click") doesn't pop up the context
menu.

I use Linux and Firefox 3 RC1.

It states in the instructions that it works best with Windows. I'm
sure that is the source of the problem.

I've read the insructions. Just want them to know, in case they didn't.

I use the program in windows on firefox and get the same results.
However, if you time it just right the right-click menu and gesture
don't interfere, it takes a couple minutes of practice.

Kenneth,
Nope. Even when my mouse is completely still, context-menu doesn't pop
up.

I'm also having some interference between the mouse gesture feature
and the right click context menu. The menu displays at each mouse
gesture move. It's quite annoying :(

Isn't it possible to set something different than right click?

I'm using Linux too, but still would like to enjoy a mouse gesture
feature.

Hi,

There is a known bug that prevents the context menu to show up on
Linux and on Mac. The indented behavior is for the context menu to
work on links and inside text fields. Fixing this is on my list of
things to do.

I am also using Linux (yet Ubuntu hardy) with firefox and played
around with mouse guestures.

If you always see a context menu upon right click, drag do the
following fix.
EDIT (top bar)
Prefrences
[Content]
next to "Enable JavaScript" hit Advanced
make sure "Disable or replace context menus" is checked.

Note, this frankenstein patch approach does open up risks from other
malicious (or candid idiot) sites.
They too will be able to disable the context menu by javascript.

<possible fix in firefox>
allow users to set options on a per URL basis
or make trusted and untrusted sites, with different security options.

I love it, I would like more gestures, like:
-go to the next message IN the same conversation and expand it
-go to the previous message IN the same conversation and expand it

I have no problems with the context menu, I'm using Mac OS X 10.4.11
with Firefox 2.0.0.14!

What luck! Came to post my complaint that I lost context menu in
Gmail using Gestures, but found solution thanks to Stokes! I heavily
use the right click menu for "search in Google" and had just
deactivated gestures. I read Stokes post about advanced Java prefs,
and though I might try un-checking "Disable or replace context
menus". Success! Now I can use gestures and right click anywhere in
gmail. I no longer see the HUD graphic, but the gestures work.

Me too :-) Same behavior: the context-menu is shown all the time.
Maybe they should allow us to (optionally) change to middle-click.
Most U*NIX people are used to middle-clicking and FF doesn't seem to
have anything mapped to it.

It does tend to cross over with the context menu sometimes, even in
Windows, but otherwise I'm loving Gestures!

I am also experiencing the same issue - the context menu disappears in
Firefox 3 under Linux. The gestures feature is awesome - I use it all
the time now - but when I need to access the Firefox spell checker (or
other context menu options), I can't.

Would it be possible to limit the mouse gestures to only working
within a message (that doesn't have editing controls open)? Or even an
option to temporarily disable it?

I am using Firefox 3.0 Final (Linux)

It works fine right clicking when my mouse is completely still.

The problem is that when I use a mouse gesture it works but the
context menu also appears.

I fully agree with this. That's the only suggestion I have for the
gestures, working within conversations.

In full agreement. I'd say that anything that uses a short-cut key/
button should allow you to configure it.

If you're using a multi-button mouse (i.e., one with a right button,
as opposed to Apple's one-button mice) with Safari on Mac OS X, this
completely covers up the context menu of Safari, which is ordinarily
made available by OS X by right-clicking the right mouse if you have a
mouse with a right button.
