Signing in to notifier from another domaim

My college email system recently migrated to a gmail engine. Everyone
now signs into gmail with a name such as x...@temple.edu using a
special login page on the school's site. Once in gmail, the non-gmail
account name is displayed at the top of the page. Is there any way to
use the gmail notifier with a non-gmail domain? If not, is there
another way to get new mail notices? Pop3 is not a good option since I
access mail from several different computers.
