According to dozens of Google-watchers, Google's ad-driven email system,
Gmail is slated to move from beta to live-status on Friday April 1st, one
year after it was introduced to a limited number of testers. On its first
day, many thought Gmail was an April Fool's joke.

I don't believe there is any chance of Gmail coming out of beta yet.
Hopefully Google still has a lot of work to do before they will
release Gmail. There are many features that I am expecting they will
introduce in order to increase competition. Also I can count at least
three of four bugs that would make them appear unfit for an email
system without a beta tag. Although they could go possible go open to
the public while remaining a beta project. According to one of the
publications I have read from Google they say their projects will
remain in beta for as long as they are planning to make major changes
to them. I will try and find a link to that publication and post
later.

Gmail going public is possible, but quite aside from escalating
storage costs, what about the speed/performance crunch?

I am far from dissatisfied, all I meant from that comment is with the
way some people act they don't always understand the concept of
something new still with a few quarks. Anyways the bug that I have in
mind that cases are still open are: "Corrupt Labels", "Can't Change mi
ID", Ads over-taking the User Interface, and Just all of the topics
they are talking of adding on the help/comment-suggestions page. The
first two you can search for and most likely find postings from me.
Also if you would like I can send you a couple of conversations that I
have had with Google.

Well, if I didnt have gmail yet, i would want gmail to go public THEN
add features. Just because they're going public doesnt mean their
features are etched in stone.

According to dozens of Google-watchers,

is this verifiable, or does it just sound good? It would make sense.
But they have a lot they could throw at us on april first hehe they
seem to like that day. pidgeon rank! gbrowser cant be far off...but im
being very hopeful.

I think it might, especially with it showing up on google.com now

but I've decently closely watched google for the past 2 years or so,
and the one thing I've basically learned is that the're
unpredictable...he they might shut down gmail for april fools day, lol

they wouldn't actually though, because people might have something
important to get to and such. Which could piss some people off.

(theoritical sob story)
"Ok so I was the babysitter, they emailed me all the contact info.
The 4 year old hit his head on the furnace and was bleeding all over.
I put a cloth on it, called an ambulance and rushed to the computer to
find the contact info, but google said gmail was shut down!!! I
couldn't believe it, I couldn't athorize the proper treament for the
child. And now it's scared with a giant scare on it's face

Ya sad story...

If they do, will they do anything to distinguish those of us who got in
during beta from those who sign up when it goes live?

When Gmail has html, then it will officially be out of beta.

yet. I hope they don't...but that is not what is keeping it in

Exactly. Also to have "image signatures" would be nice as well. This
basic "notepad display" is killing me...well...it's not but it would
help alleviate the pain.

They should at least give you the option and if you're that concerned
couldn't they create a feature to "block" the virus or warn you (like
the "display image" feature in Gmail)?

I don't think Gmail will go public on April 1st or anytime soon since
they just started giving us 50 invites not too long
ago and when they have not instituted any of the items from their
"possible improvements list" ?? Would it not make more sense to let
time pass so ppl can give out the invites and especially to make the
improvements ppl have voted for first and then go public??

I don't see Gmail worrying about any special magic in going public a
year from when they originally appeared on the scene last April. I
think they will go public when they feel they are ready.

it looks possible to me, maybe not exiting of beta but have a sign-up
link on gmail.com not just the elusive one of google.com that only
appears on odd settings

I'm putting all my money on them NOT going public.

No. They are still invite-only, so not public, by definition.

well its one day a way for this question to be anwsered. Personally I
think that gmail will not got live, for the sake of adding more
features. Like what Fuzzy Logic says, "No. They are still invite-only,
so not public, by definition."
