For the past ten days or so, I've been having difficulties sending
emails to recipients with AOL accounts. About a day after I send the
email, I'll get the following from mailer...@googlemail.com:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.

Delivery to the following recipient has been delayed:

*********@aol.com

Message will be retried for 2 more day(s)

Technical details of temporary failure:
TEMP_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 12): 421-: (RLY:CS4)
http://postmaster.info.aol.com/errors/421rlycs4.html
421 SERVICE NOT AVAILABLE

Then, a day or so later, another message, as follows:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.

Delivery to the following recipient has been delayed:

*********@aol.com

Finally, one day after that:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

*********@aol.com

Technical details of permanent failure:
TEMP_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 12): 421-: (RLY:CS4)
http://postmaster.info.aol.com/errors/421rlycs4.html
421 SERVICE NOT AVAILABLE

I came across an article at marketwatch.com from 27 March that seemed
to explain some of the issue. To quote from the piece:
"The problems experienced by... possibly thousands of other Gmail users
are a consequence of Google's sometimes-hawkish policy on privacy. In
an unusual practice, Google makes Gmail users virtually anonymous.
That's led some spam blockers to occasionally blacklist entire Gmail
servers, the massive Google computers that hold many Gmail accounts,
because they can't separate the spammers from the legitimate emailers."

Anyone else experiencing or familiar with this problem? Any
solutions/suggestions?

AOL filter are know to be tempremental and can be set against an ISP and an online system. Have you asked the recipiants about the problem because they should be checking their provider if it bounces mail.

I send out an email every week to a fairly large email list that
includes some AOL addresses. I have had this error before, but I
typically just get the one email saying the message won't be delivered.
The problem seems to go away completely on its own (and randomly
reappear later), and I doubt there's anything you can do about it
besides using a different email address (which isn't very helpful).

I have noticed that some domain name providers e-mail forwarding too
does not work. For instance with namecheap.com, if you have an e-mail
forwarding setup, never works with Gmail.

Please, does someone have a solution for this?

Yup, I've found myself sending emails to my hotmail account, in order
to be able to forward them to the AOL addresses. Really annoying. I
hope, as you say, the problem will go away on its own. This is getting
frustrating.

I doubt that the 'problem' or 'service' or 'bug' whatever this classifies as, is at the gmail's end.. coz I got exactly the same mail when i tried registering to some forum which was specific to a company, ... 2days, 1 day, (do not respond), it failed... then i tried it with my yahoo address, it was successful !!
