How can you detect whose turn it is to answer?

A practical problem i have come across while using the otherwise
intuitive feature of conversation view:

Am i missing something obvious here or is it true that you cannot
easily detect whose turn it is to answer in conversation overview (e.g.
in the inbox)

The order of names only tells you who started the conversation, right?
And, sorry for finding it two difficult to bother about whether the
number of messages in brackets is odd or not ....
Thanks for a clue here

what do you mean by whose turn it is to answer...? messages are
displayed in the order they are recieved. if you want to reply to an
older message.. you click reply for that messsage. i guess im just
confused with the question.

Andy,

If you are in fact talking about your inbox view in gmail; you can
follow the conversation from the top down, the latest message is
displayed on the bottom of the conversation.

With that, in a two way conversation you can tell who who's turn it is
next by who wrote last or with three or more people the message should
either be sent to one or more that the message directly impacts and
cc'd to the rest. This would direct the message question or statement
to a specific person(s) in the conversation.

Having said this, really the conversation will take on it's own order
of replays but adding correct Email etiquette always helps.

However if you are talking about google groups... sorry I can't help
you there.

thanks for your answers so far. i might have not made myself clear: i
am talking about the inbox view in gmail. i know that once i have
openend the message preview it is very clear who has sent the last
message in the thread as i can expand all of them.

The problem arises only in the "preview" of messages in the inbox. I
would like to be able to see in the single-line information if i have
already answered a mail or am waiting for a reply from the other person
...

turn on snippets... which would show what the message contains. that should
work... considering you remember what your reply/write with.

Actually i have switched the snipplets on.

What i was looking for was something like what offline clients like
thunderbird or outlook do where a little icon indicates if you have
replied ..

i was just curious if anybody else misses that functionality. i
certainly do.

Well, actually I don't.
If I need to act upon a message, I will do that immediately.
If I cannot do it immediately, I will "star" the message, and every
now and then I scan my "starred" messages for things to do!

Just my 2 (euro)cents...

you have replied when it shows 'me' on the left hand side of the
message line. (the part that displays the names). if it's showing
someone elses name that means you haven't replied to the most current
message in regards to that conversation. i don't know if i made myself
clear.

Thanks Derek, that should answer my question. As i mentioned in my
first message i thought it was just about who originally started the
conversation. But if it is indeed about who replied last that is
exactly what i had been looking for and i am happy :-)

Kind of along the same line, the conversations can be confusing, I
agree. I belong to a Freecycle list and one list e-mail in particular
was a real mess. Multiple people replied to my message, and because
they all had the same subject line and were in response to that
particular e-mail, all the various peoples' responses ended up in one
conversation. It would be great if we could designate certain e-mails
within a conversation as new conversations.

Any ideas?

i thin kthe conversation doesnot repeats the ids once it is there on
display on the list.. so kind of..

u send, i send, u send, i send... but on the list of senders... u and
i will there only once... and that will be in the order of the inital
postings only... so i guess that wont help what andy is looking for...

regards,
Ashish.

I have had 100 e-mail conversations with friends. so after two or three
exchanges in the from field in the inbox will change. So with my buddy
it changed to K, Me, K, Me, K. I think it only shows 4 things. But in
my example K replied the latest so in theory it is my turn to reply.

in theory its ur turn to reply.. but in practical... the inbox view
will only show

K, Me (100)

you can confirm this by watching ur inbox again... so who had replied
the last is now known by the inbox view as a.ndy is looking for...

regards,
Ashish.
