The only thing really great about Gmail than other email services is
the 1,000 MB storage, but other than that, what's so great about it?

Conversation style emails, labels instead of folders, fast page loads,
no annoying pop-ups, i could go on and on.

well the storage PLUS the speed is what made me forward all my
pop3/imap e-mails to google. The others like hotmail and yahoo are
just killer on dialup, they try and feed you so many imanges and other
worthless crap per page..

Googles javascript+css interface is truely the best webmail I've ever
seen and used. So even if the others add 1gb storage or more, google
still wins hands down. What good is 1gb when the pages load slower
then molassess.

And the anti-phishing features. Have you seen Gmail's warning when
there's a dodgy email in your inbox. Very handy. Plus free pop access.

The labels are what got me hooked...It's genius and I'm suprised no one
else has thought of it. You can have a message with more than one
label and still have it in the inbox, but with folders you can only
have a message in one folder. Plus, I'm on dial-up and Gmail pops up
its pages in a matter of seconds where other email sites take me a
minute or so. Also, I've had Gmail for about 2 months now and I have
only gotten 2 spam emails. And that was because I bought something
online then I forgot to uncheck the "recieve emails from 3rd party
partners" so all I had to do was go in and unsubscribe. With hotmail,
I start getting tons of junk mail within a few weeks after creating my
account. I also like the keyboard shortcuts...they make things alot
faster.

I think the whole interface is genius. I'm constantly impressed about
the way they anticipate what you're going to want to do most often and
have those functions ready to hand, with the more esoteric ones just a
click away. Also, any time I think that I can't do something I want to
do, I find that I can. It's just that they've got a better way of doing
it than other webmail interfaces. It's not perfect yet, but it's miles
ahead of what anyone else has done. I don't know what the speed is like
on a slow connection - I have cable at home and DSL at work, but even
on a very, very old computer the interface is as fast as a client most
of the time and that's quite an accomplishment as well.

1 GB of free storage is unique. While MSN and Yahoo will start to
catch up in the coming months, Google will have already made its mark
with the first large scale free-offering in gmail.

I think gmail team, will support user-personalized css (stylesheets).

Or at least support more "skins" ^^

1 gig isn't really that unique anymore, for many places are also offering
that much storage. i don't even think google were the first to bring us 1
gig accounts. didn't another crowd get in first? might be wrong, of course.

But they were the ones that did it with a lot of publicity / fanfare...

If the other crowd (whoever) did it first, They wouldnt have got the
same public reaction - Hotmail / Yahoo etc might have upped their
storage - but it wouldnt be so dramatic.

PS - Why is hotmail around anymore - Its been YEARS since anyone had 2
megs of storage - why would anyone still want Hotmail ?
(before they upped the storage)

gmail carries the name of google.. which in itself hold a lot of
publicity.. along with that the simplicity of gmail is not matched by
the rest.. though it is true that a few site offered 1 gig or more
space before gmail.. but the whole idea of acquiring accounts made it
popular fast. i.e. when it tough to get it more people want it.. apply
the economics theory here less supply increases demand along with
other variables such as company name.. past services.. market
requirments.. sector targetted etc.. etc.. etc..
Gmail Defently has THE BEST MARKETING techniques inforced along with
the simplicity, features, reliability, goodwill etc etc etc...

The first result is for Yahoo, and I'm really starting to take offence
to their slogan.

The second result is for a sign-in error with Hotmail.

Gmail is probably pretty far down on that list (I don't think it's on
the first page), so I guess Gmail still won't get the general unwashed
masses, but most of us "in the know" folk seem to prefer Gmail.
