When I sent out 2 Invites from gmail,
My number of invtes went from 4 to 2 (duh)

Now sometimes it goes back to 4 invites.

It does it at home and school, which means it cant be a computer.

nvm... don't worry about it. google is obviously giving you more
invites after you give some away. it happens all the time. they want
you to keep inviting more users.

I believe it's based on activity, but there is a cap based on what
"generation" of user you are. The person who invited me was one of the
first to get a gmail account, and he had 6 invites. After inviting 4
other people, within a few days he was back up to 6 again.

I came after him, so my cap is 4 invites. I started off with none, but
gmail has been constantly running on my laptop (except when I reboot)
since I got it, so within a couple days I suddenly had 4 invites. Since
then I have been sending out a more or less steady stream of invites to
other people who request accounts from me, and due to their
replenishing, I've never actually dropped down to 0.

I'm not sure exactly what the parameters are for your "invite cap". I
don't think it ever drops below 4 no matter how many generations you go
down. I have no way of knowing, though, if it can get higher than 6,
although I know that 6 is attainable.

it did the same to me. I think google distributs them randomly, so I
don't think you are having a problem

two people i know got 10 invites and 15 invites respectivly. So you can
definantly go higher than 6 invites. Also both started with 6 and kept
getting more!

I had a spam type email a month or so ago...I reported it and walla I
got 6 invites. So, I wonder if, some interaction with the gmail team
also has to do with invite allocation.

send them to aimlessbob @ gmail.com care of gmail-generation. he'll provide
a link back to us and the invites do go to non-gmailers. check out his site

I think part of getting more invites is directly related to inviting
an active user, so they must beg, pay, etc...

i have dormant accounts full of invites at the moment. i've never really
used them (ever) but they still get invites. there is no reason why people
get invites or don't get invites and it has nothing to do with users being
active or not. google must be loving all this speculation. i myself,
however, can't help but feel like were going over old ground here. ahem

yes... "impossible to figure out", unless you work on the gmail team.
someone on orkut might know, though. some google staff hang out there.

this is off-topic. perhaps email in private next time. i'm sure someone here
can invite you to orkut (i've since cancelled my account) BUT do it
off-group please OR over on gmail-lounge.

Well, I guess you'll have to wait for more or send yourself the one
you have left, open another account and hope it gets invites soon.

I get a replenish almost everyday, so-to-say. My cap seems to be 10,
so when i have 8 for exam, the next day, I'll have 10 again. Though,
I don't have many people to give it to. Mainly because the majority
of people (apart from avid computer users) don't know about Gmail.
Maybe Gmailshoud advertise more...anyways, but that should be another
conversation/thread

The whole invite-replenishing thing is really weird. I haven't gotten
any new invites for about two or three weeks now. I guess the public
will never know how they're distributed.

Why should Gmail tell the public how invites are distributed, when
they can get all this free entertainment by reading our speculations?
*g*

When I eat an Oreo and wait between ten and fifteen minutes before
checking my e-mail, I earn an extra invite... how does Gmail know I'm
eating cookies?

Lol. Yeah. Besides, if they did let everyone know when or how they
distribute invites, it'll increase everybody's invite spam. And that
would be evil, something Google wouldn't do :)

Because they're watching you using their new Keyhole technology! </jokes>

Agreed. It would be exactly like specifying their PageRank algorithms.
If you say, "These are the procedures we're going to follow," it's an
open invitation (no pun intended) for people to game the system. And
you leave yourself open to complaints about people who say, "I did X
and Y, now I'm *entitled* to result Z."

Of course, I think that there's always the possibility that invites
are distributed by pigeons.
