Can anyone tell me what this button does? Does it merely move messages
from Spam folder to Inbox, or does it somehow train Gmail such that in
future very similar messages will not be treated as Spam?

If it does not train GMail, then it is useless....

I think it does train it. Certain things were landing in my spam box
that weren't spam and after a few times of clicking "not spam" they now
come to my inbox.

I'd be interested to know if it uses fuzzy content-based logic or
simply whitelists senders.

As far as I can tell, the "Not Spam" button only moves things over to
my Inbox. I've been clicking on "Not Spam" one all the emails from one
particular mailing list for weeks now. I even added the originating
email address for the list to my address book, to no avail.

I'll be interested to see how the google spam filter develops over
time. In theory it should be something that they could be very good at,
given their clever algorithm and minds, but we shall see.

It doesn't really affect me greatly at the moment anyway as I only get
minimal spam (1 or 2 a day), and it's all filtered correctly.

There was one week where I get e-mails from here, and also
Gmail-Users, and they were marked as spam. I guess it takes a while
for the Gmail Spam Filters to finally click, but does eventually
happen.

My experiences with the "Not Spam" are excellent.
I never got any of them back in my Spam folder!

I can verify that the "Not Spam" button does learn to not label
certain emails as 'Spam'. After about 7-10 "Not Spam" clicks, an email
that I received was correctly filtered through to my inbox.

Yeah, well for me it was a bit different. After one (sometimes 2)
clicks, the email was filtered to my inbox! No problems at all = )
