For all you Opera users out there. I did not know until today but the
new beta for Opera 8 (build 4710)
ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/win/800b1/en/
has support for both Gmail and Google Groups.

the previous builds of opera worked fine with gmail. i used to use 7.6
and it worked fine.

I always had problems with 7.6. Gmail always thought I had my cookies
off and I could never get past the loading phase or when I did I was
presented with a sparkly blank page

However, now, in playing with Gmail in Opera a bit more, it looks like
the spell check feature does not provide suggestions for misspelled
words.

hmmm... firefox has *always* worked with gmail, and it's free. :]

Opera's free too if you don't mind Google ads. :D The version I have
dosn't work with Gmail, so I've been useing Firefox. But as soon as
Opera supports Gmail this firefox crap is uninstalled... Opera is
truely WAY better feature wise. (At least features I care about..
heh).

I know that firefox has always worked with Gmail but I also think that
Opera is the way. though firefox is definitely the best alternate
choice for me.

are we talking about the best browser for gmail? if so, then i would have to
say firefox, too.

Hmm.. firefox is nice, definitely better then IE. But Opera has
features that firefox dosn't (yet). If firefox gets features like
Opera then I would glady switch. :D

But so long as Gmail/Opera are not operateing together i get to play
with Firefox. So I can decide for myself. Hehe.. i think firefox uses
less resources though.. which is a plus on it's side. And the plugin
thing looks nice, exploreing that. :D

so, why doesn't opera work with gmail?

last time i tried opera it worked just fine with gmail.

im curious to hear what features opera has that are better then
firefox? i find that hard to believe.

There's a couple of things I miss (I used opera almost exclusively
until I tried out firefox, cos I couldn't log in to gmail in opera and
I refused to use IE (spits in a bucket) - the main feature I miss at
the moment is that opera remembers all the pages you had open and
reloads them - firefox only did that with a plugin, and it hasn't been
updated to work with the current build - at least it hadn't last time
I checked. I also like the 'wand' (remember password) feature, cos it
gave me a choice of logins. Most of the other features are available
as plugins for firefox, which is fine cos it makes it more
customisable (if there is such a word).

Have to admit tho I hardly ever fire opera up these days, I'm a firefox convert.

Not sure how much of that made sense, it's 1:30am here and I'm off to bed:-)

That's nice but I think i will stick with <a

probably because opera more strictly follows the CSS and JavaScript
standards.. IE and I guess Firefox (trying to be more compatable with
IE i bet) uses alot of non-standard stuff. That i guess gmail takes
advantage of.

what? i thought firefox was the most web compliant browser out there.
lots of web developers use firefox for their needs.

I also like in Opera the ability to disable images on a page, and the
ability to just display already downloaded (cached) images instead of
fetching more. Useful when I browse forums on dialup. Alot of people
with MASSIVE images for their signatures and avatars. Theres more
features in Opera that i like but can't remember them at the moment..
heh

well Opera strictly follows the standards. IE dosn't do anything of
the sort. I presume Firefox is trying to be more compatable with sites
that work only on IE, therefore its probably implemnting alot of the
non-standard stuff IE does. Since Opera dosn't do those (they probably
are adding it in the new 8.0 i presume), its not fully compatable with
sites that have crazy CSS and JavaScript stuff, unless those was
written to the standards.

I'm going to guess that Gmail wasn't written to the standards, and
instead took advantage of some of the "imporovements" in IE and
Firefox.

i highly dount that firefox is trying to be like IE. IE is the worst
model to follow.

Lol. Try telling that to AOL (the guys who fund the Mozilla

ok not to burst everyones bubble.. but we should probably get back on
subject as far as gmail is concerned. it's nice and all dogging MS but
i have a feeling this topic needs to get back on subject.

It will, just be patient for the next month and Opera & Gmail will work
together just fine. Opera is very close to a new release.

I am afraid this is not the right forum to discuss this. If one of us
could start this topic in the lounge, I'll be happy to add my inputs
:)

I would guess that opera does not work because it does, or did , not
have XMLHttpRequest support. though I don't know too much about the
standard. does anyone else know?
