oh, really. See, I forgot about that...so, over in germany, they have
to @googlemail.com?

no, they dont have to, but accounts made in germany are technically
@googlemail.com ones i.e. the "from" shows that and thats whats in the
top right as the login name. but if they have the "accounts" tab in
settings, i suppose they can make it look like its from thier
corresponding @gmail.com one.

Recently I wanted to sign up for a 15 day trial for a PR service that
required an email address that is not a "free" account like hotmail,
yahoo, gmail and the like.

Not wanted to tempt the spam devils, I wanted to use a throwaway
account, and it struck me that changing my X...@gmail.com to
X...@googlemail.com just might be a workaround...

It worked like a charm.

Great tip. Also try mailinator, dodgeit and pookmail (all dot coms) for a
more disposable address.

yeah, derek, thats because of a "feature" in gmail. If you send a
mail to an address that ends up bouncing back to your gmail, gmail
will eat it. try sending the mail to another gmail account.

Hi,

Just a note, did http://www.googlemail.com worked one day?
I get
Error
InterScan HTTP Version 3.81-Build_1084 $Date: 04/06/2005 18:36:0048$

Connecting to www.googlemail.com: Host not found

It would at least need a forward to mail.google.com?

I'm surprised that google doesn't redirect people who go to googlemail.

Interestingly: http://www.googlemail.com goes nowhere but http://googlemail.com redirects.  What are they thinking?  Go figure!
