I have been happily/successfully using GMAIL to receive and download
appraisal files for appx 4 months (appx 1-2mb, file type .zap)

Everything has been working smoothly until recently.

In the problem free past, when I would download the attachment ("open"
rather than save) the appraisal program would correctly open up and
allow me to download the .zap file into my appraisal program.

Now, with gmail, I do not get the option to download. I only get the
save option.
When I try to save, the save "default" file type is .zip

When I select save "all file types" and rename the file correctly
(xxxx.zap), it appears to save properly (file name, type etc appear
correct) however I get an error reading and am unable to open the file.

When I forward the very same file from gmail with .zap file attachment
to my alternate verizon email address and open the file thru outlook
2003, i successfully invoke the correct dialogue that allows me
download thed .zap file into the appraisal program. In the past, I
could do this with both my verizon/outlook 2003 and with gmail. Now I
cannot with gmail.

I have not added any hardware or software since gmail/zap file download
problem began. I did download a zip file the other day (wondering if
there is a connection since gmail default tries to save as .zip, rather
than .zap file)

The appraisal software vendor was no help. I am hoping an experienced
GMAIL user can help me resolve this problem...namely, successful
downloading of .zap files into my appraisal program.

thank you
bill k

This is Gmails rule in zip files and attachments.

I can't receive executable files

As a security measure to prevent potential viruses, Gmail doesn't allow you to send or receive executable files (such as files ending in .exe) that could contain damaging executable code.

Gmail won't accept these types of files even if they are sent in a zipped (.zip, .tar, .tgz, .taz, .z, .gz) format. If this type of message is sent to your Gmail account, it is bounced back to the sender automatically.

You can send and receive messages up to 10 megabytes (MB) total (including attachments). Any message that exceeds this limit will not be delivered to your inbox and will be returned to the sender.

"I do not get the option to download. I only get the save option."
Does that mean that you are NOT getting the 'Open'/'View' option, but
only the 'Save' option?

If the file is saved as 'xxxx.zap' on your computer, then your
appraisal program should be able to open it, irrespective of whether it
was downloaded through GMail or through any other email client. If your
appraisal program is not being able to open a program of type .zap
saved through GMail, but is able to load the same file if it is
uploaded and saved again through a email client, then it sure is
puzzling.

There seem to be some posts in this and other forums relating certain
recent incompatibilities between Verizon and GMail -- maybe you could
check those out. Else, you could file a 'Bug Report' with GMail ...
I'll paste you the link if I can get it, or someone else will.
